INFLUENCE OF LEADERSHIP STYLES ON ADAPTABILITY OF NURSING STAFF
Abstract
Effective and efficient leadership has been one of the key factors deciding the satisfaction and engagement of the employees for their job and thus determining the overall performance of the organisation (Fiaz, Su & Saqib, 2017). Through the current study, efforts have been made to explore the concept of leadership and various leadership styles and the study has been titled, Influence of Leadership Styles on Adaptability of Nursing Staff. The current study aims at describing the leadership and its various styles along with some of the most well known leadership theories. As opined by Cope and Murray (2017) leadership styles of nurses have a huge influence on their practices and performance.
The study shall later highlight the influence of leadership styles on the job satisfaction of human resources and further explaining more about the influence of leadership styles on the adaptability of nursing Staff. In order to provide authentic support to the arguments presented by the researcher, secondary literary sources have been referred to. Data have been collected via surveys and interviews to highlight the influence of leadership styles on the adaptability of the nursing Staff.

Chapter 1: Introduction
1.0 Introduction
The healthcare sector is subjected to constant reforms with an aim to provide health care services that are safe, effective, and efficient and of high quality. Effective leadership in such a scenario acts as one of the key elements for driving and leading all the changes in the healthcare system. Nurses with leadership quality and traits acts as the bridge between policies and practices and help to ensure that members of the team obey by the safety protocols and provide their patient with the best possible care and assurance that they are in safe hands. It is mandatory for nurses to be good leaders as well so that they can provide their patients with exemplary healthcare services and motivate the other members of their team to do the same.
The NMC (2018) have defined four domains, on which the nursing Staff have to focus in order to be competent. These domains include communication and interpersonal skills, professional values, decision-making and nursing practices and leadership and team working. NMC also expects the nurses to be good communicators. Developing leadership skills will help the nursing Staff to be better communicators and decision-makers and therefore will help them to focus on their core competencies. AS mentioned in the NMC code of ethics, nurses must be a model of integrity and leadership to act as role models for others. Leadership is important in nursing to ensure that wellbeing of the people is protected and their experience of healthcare systems can be improved.
1.1 Background of the Study
Leadership in nursing is a concept known since time immemorial. Effective leadership in nursing involves influencing others to provide the high quality care to the patients through direct participation. It not only involves providing clinical care but also includes boosting the morale of the patient so that they do not lose their will to recover from bad health conditions. As opined by Huber (2016), effectiveness of leadership skills in nursing involves creating a workplace environment where everybody has a clear vision and motivated to serve humanity in general.
1.2 Problem Statement
The challenge is, the healthcare system is subjected to various reforms and therefore requires the nursing Staff to be adaptable to such rapidly evolving conditions. Nurses with different leadership styles may adapt to these changes differently and therefore it becomes essential to analyse the impact of different leadership styles on the adaptability of the nursing Staff.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The intended purpose of this study is to develop a better understanding of the impact of different leadership styles on the adaptability of the nursing Staff in a range of clinical conditions and situations. The study shall also help to determine the impact of these leadership styles on the motivation and empowerment of the nursing Staff.
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The objectives, which the current study aims to achieve, are as stated below:
· To understand leadership and various leadership styles in general
· To understand the impact of various leadership styles on the adaptability of the nursing Staff
· To analyse the impact of leadership styles on the motivational level and empowerment of the nursing Staff
· To suggest suitable recommendations for improving the quality of care and management skills of nursing Staff
1.5 Research Questions
· The research questions that shall be covered while conducting the study are:
· What is leadership and what are different forms of leadership styles?
· How do different leadership styles have a different impact on the adaptability of nursing Staff?
· To, what extent leadership styles have an impact on the motivational level and empowerment of the nursing Staff?
· How the quality of nursing services and management skills of nurses can improved based on their leadership skills?
1.6 Hypothesis
There are two possible hypotheses for the study as mentioned below:
H1: Different leadership styles do not affect the service style and management abilities of the nursing Staff in a different manner.
H2: Different leadership styles have a different impact on the service style and management abilities of the nursing Staff.
1.7 Significance of the Study
The study will help to analyse the impact of different leadership styles on the adaptability of nursing Staff and thus will help to determine the areas of improvement, which will help the nursing Staff to serve humanity in a better and motivated manner.
1.8 Scope of the Study
The scope of this study is limited to the clinical nursing Staff and the impact of leadership styles will only be analysed on the adaptability of the nursing Staff towards rapidly changing conditions in the healthcare sector.
1.9 Operational Definitions
Leadership: As explained by Anderson and Sun (2017), it is a process, action, method, or leading a group of people, with different personality traits that to motivate them to achieve a common goal.
Leadership styles: Method of providing directions or implementing plans to keep motivated and focused towards the achievement of their common goals.
Adaptability: It is the quality of adjustment according to new situations or rapidly changing situations.
Healthcare system: A method by which, healthcare is organised and delivered, to the people through various financial and human resources
Clinical Nursing Staff: Health care professionals who are determined to provide the patients with nursing care by making use of their professional as well as their leadership skills (Stanley & Stanley, 2018).
Chapter 2: Literature Review
2.0 Introduction
A range of literary sources have been considered, referred and accessed to develop an in-depth understanding of the topic chosen for study. The variables associated with the topic shall also be considered and their relation with the topic will be highlighted through the information gained through various literary sources. In this chapter, we shall discuss independent literary topics while their arrangement will be interlinked with each other. The literary sources will help to present a critical analysis of the topic along with the variables associated with it.
2.1 The concept of Leadership
Leadership can be defined as a practical skill or a research area, which encompasses the ability of an individual to guide or lead other individuals, teams, groups or the entire organisation. Leadership is also known as the art of motivating people to channelise their energy into the right direction towards the achievement of a common goal or objectives. To put it in simple words, leadership is a process of socially influencing the people so that their efforts could be maximised towards the achievement of a common goal (Silva, 2016). A good leader is identified to be the one who moves forward on the right path and influence and motivate others to do the same. In an article “Importance of Leadership Style towards Quality of Care Measures in Healthcare Settings:A Systematic Review” by Sfantou et al. (2017), it has been highlighted that management and leadership is extremely important for strengthening the quality of care. The article is well structured and therefore is easy to understand. However, a comprehensive language would have enhanced the understanding of the concepts further. As opined by Sfantou et al. (2017) leadership is extremely important for healthcare professionals to strengthen integration and quality of care provided to patients. Different leadership styles have a direct influence on the quality of healthcare.
An efficient leader may direct, guide, regulate and influence the behaviour of other individuals whether in society or in a workplace setting to ensure that an ethical environment could be maintained. The focus of leadership as practical skill is to inspire the people to do something innovative and creative, which they never though they are capable of doing. For an individual to be an effective and efficient leader, he/she must possess the following characteristics:
Clarity of Thoughts: A leader must be clear with his/her vision and there should not be any ambiguity in their thoughts. They must know what is to be accomplished and must communicate the same down the channel in a clear and concise manner.
Decisiveness: A good leader must be efficient enough to make instant decisions and must reflect consistency through the decisions he/she makes. A leader must not back out form their decisions until and unless it is extremely necessary to do so (Putra & Cho, 2019). As stated in Nursing Times, nursing staff particularly the senior nurses must possess problem-solving abilities and skills so that they turn out to be effective decision-makers. This article highlights the importance of leadership skills in nursing profession. The content mentioned in this article will help nurse to become confident leaders. These skills will help the nursing staff to improve their practice and thus enhance their professional career. The strength of the article is that it will help the nursing staffs to gain a lot of skill and knowledge about their profession particularly in terms of leadership and team work. However, the weakness of that article is that it is not structured properly. Headings and sub-heading would have helped to develop a better understanding of the concepts.
Courage: A positive leader must be courageous enough to take risks and must motivate the executives as well to be innovative and creative in the tasks they undertake. They must motivate their subordinates to undertake tasks they never undertook and therefore helping the executives to explore their abilities and capabilities.
Passion: A good leader is always energetic and passionate and motivates others to be the same. A leader must make his/her subordinated passionate about the work they do. Nursing Staff must be passionate and must have a motivational influence on others as well (Nursing Times).
Humility: Efficient leaders take feedback from others in a constructive way and try to incorporate it in their actions to behaviour so that they may improve as leaders (Friedrich, Griffith & Mumford, 2016). They are courageous enough to take criticism in a positive way.
2.2 Different Types of Leadership Styles
All the leaders do not follow the same style to direct, guide or motivate people. They have their own methods of implementing plans, directing people and motivating them to achieve the desired goals. Therefore, different leaders exhibit different leadership styles. Some of the most common leadership styles are as discussed below:
2.2.1 Democratic Leadership Style
This type of leadership style encourages the group members to participate actively into a group decision and come up with their ideas and opinions. The members of a group are encouraged to take a more participative role in the process of...
