CANCER IN UK – AN ONGOING BURDEN
According to the world cancer research fund, every year close to 12.7 million cases of cancer
are detected across the globe. In UK alone, at least 350,000 cases of cancer are detected every
year. Majority of these are linked to lifestyle related issues. Besides the cases which are
diagnosed, several other people develop symptoms which can be closely associated with
cancer that remain undetected.
Statistics of elderly population suffering with cancer
According to the Cancer Research Foundation in UK, primarily the older population in UK is
detected for cancer, thus considering it to be an elderly disease. More than 36% of the
patients diagnosed with cancer are aged 75 and above. This constitutes more than a third of
the total patients. Besides more than 63% of the patients diagnosed with cancer are aged 65
and above. Thus it is quite clear that ageing population is more prone to a deadly disease like
Cancer (Fig 1.1).

Needs and desires of elderly population diagnosed with cancer
Besides this, evidences suggest that amongst the elderly population, men are more prone to
prostate cancer, while elderly women are often diagnosed with breast cancers. Such cases are
not detected early, and may prove fatal due to their detection in the final stages. Once
diagnosed with cancer, life of individuals changes significantly, and the individual not able to
lead a normal life any more. Besides expecting the best possible treatment, an elderly person
diagnosed with cancer expects and needs the following:
 No discrimination - Patients do not want to be treated differently or discriminated in
any manner. They want to be treated as an individual without being discriminated for
their belief, culture or lifestyle
 Want to be heard – Besides being cared for and...
