CJ/SOC 395: Migration Final Project Content: Public attitudes towards refugees have shifted throughout America’s history. Historically, attitudes towards refugee admittance in the United States have prioritized refugees from countries in the Global North (wealthy, industrialized nations). Currently, at least 89 million people (1:88) around the world have been forced to flee their homes (UNHCR, 2022). The purpose of this project is to critically analyze the difference in public attitudes towards the admittance of refugees from the Global North and the Global South. In order to complete this research, you will conduct a content analysis of two news stories. One depicting Ukrainian refugees (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsZxCmkAMDI) and the other depicting refugees from one of the following countries: 1. Haiti: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IP6DFuZy2IE 2. Afghanistan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X80mZAOLqk4 3. Mexico: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQW0WhNRBfQ In order to complete your content analysis, you will use the comment section of the Ukrainian video as well as the comment section of the video of country of your choice. In order to complete your analysis, at lease 25 comments from each video must be used. Completing a Content Analysis: A content analysis is an unobtrusive qualitative method of research that focuses on recorded human artifacts. You can analyze data such as text messages, books, Facebook posts, video, and audio and do not need to directly interact with participants. Content analysis is used in studies where “the aim is to better understand factors such as behaviors, attitudes, values, emotions, and opinions” (Crosley, 2021, p. 1). · Step One: Create your research question: What is the difference in attitudes between Ukrainian refugees and refugees from __________? · Given this research question, you will search the data for content related to attitudes about Ukrainian and _____ refugees. · Step Two: Create themes based upon what you find in the research. Themes are created when a concept appears multiple times in the data. · These themes must be operationalized (given a clear definition – what does it mean/not mean?) · For example: one common concept that frequently appears in comments regarding refugees is racism. If you find a theme of racism in your data, be sure to provide the definition of racism you are using. · Step Three: Code the data using your selected themes · Tip: Color coding your themes using highlighters is very helpful! Paper Instructions Part I: Setting the Stage – Methods Section (1-2 pages) (20 points) · What is the overarching research question? (Provided above) · What two groups are you comparing? · Why did you choose the comparison group? · Based upon the video provided, what is the current situation of the chosen comparison group? (Provide a brief overview) · How did you code your data? (What method did you use?) · After coding your data, what was your final sample size (i.e. how many comments in total did you code?) Part II: The Case (1-2 pages) (20 points) · What were the themes that emerged from the data? · Operationalize each theme (give a clear definition – what does it mean/not mean?) · Give 2-3 examples of each theme Part III: Analysis (3-5 pages) (50 points) · Revisit the research question: what differences in public opinion did you notice between your chosen group and Ukrainian refugees? · As an expert in the field explain your reasoning (using specific course material to support your arguments) as to why we see these differences in public opinion between the two groups · How do these opinions perpetuate social inequality? · Did your findings surprise you? Why/why not? · Based upon your finding, discuss where you would place each group on Masseys Stereotype Content Model. · Explain your reasoning for each placement.
