Chapter two in unit three discusses ethics in law enforcement. In Louisville, Kentucky officers are being ordered to remove their protective equipment. They are being forced to use a “soft approach” when dealing with unruly crowds of people. Professional competence and professional behavior are codes of ethics. This demonstrates severe lack of competence from the administration.

We have been talking about use of force and policy reviews. Lopez (2020) stated in an article that Colorado is trying to make amendments on use of force. This bill that is proposed would require all officer to wear body cameras. Body camera footage would be required to be released within fourteen days of any incident. Any officer who is found guilty of inappropriate use of force to be terminated from employment and their certification to be revoked. This bill also includes better data collection.

The final article being shared is something interesting as everyone in higher education can relate to. This article is dealing with the unethical behavior of a Professor in the criminal justice field. Port City Daily Staff stated over 80,000 signatures were obtained demanding the removal of this Professor. The University of North Carolina at Wilmington claims Professor Adams comments are “vile”, but they cannot violate his rights to freedom of speech. According to the University’s policy, he could be fired for misconduct. However, the University has not released Adams from his employment. With all the issues the law enforcement community is facing, it is appalling to see a criminal justice professor act this way and teach future police officers.
