1 CVE20005 ROAD ENGINEERING; ROAD GEOMETRIC AND PAVEMENT DESIGN PROJECT TOTAL MARKS = 100; ACTUAL ALLOCATED MARKS = 50 Introduction This design project is in SIX parts. Parts 1, 2 and 3 involve manual design of typical cross- sections, horizontal alignment (HAL) and vertical alignment (VAL). Parts 4, 5 and 6 involve manual design of a suitable granular pavement, completing/optimising the road design in AutoCAD Civil Site Design (CSD) module and analysing final Earthworks (EW) report. All formulae, charts and tables that you need are available in Appendices A-D at the end of this document. Instructions 1. Work in groups of THREE. • You can find partners using the nominated discussion board on Canvas. 2. Submissions: • Reports: GROUP SUBMISSIONS i.e. each group submits ONE REPORT ONLY for each of the submissions detailed below. o Each report should have the provided ASSIGNMENT COVER SHEET with signatures of ALL members and % contributions. • Electronic files of AutoCAD CSD: INDIVIDUAL SUBMISSION i.e. each member should submit own files. • All submissions should be uploaded using the nominated pages in Canvas before the due dates/times of each submission. 3. Help: For help with the different parts of the assignment and software application, please see next page for dates of consultation sessions. • Please keep in mind that you can ONLY get help during these sessions. • Tutors can help with the manual designs ONLY • CSS staff can help with the application of software ONLY 4. All manual designs/drawings SHOULD BE DONE IN WORD. Convert your complete report into pdf before submitting. Submissions and Due Dates 1. GROUP RPORT (Pdf) Submission for Parts 1 & 2: Manual designs of cross sections and horizontal alignment including hand calculations. • Date: Midnight on Sunday 6th of September (week 6). • Keep a copy of your designs to use in AutoCAD CSD • Marks allocated: 10 for cross-sections and 25 for HAL = 35 2. GROUP REPORT (Pdf) Submission for Part 3: Manual design of vertical alignment design and hand calculations • Date: Midnight on Sunday 27th of September (week 8) • Keep a copy of your design to use in AutoCAD CSD • Marks allocated = 35 2 3. GROUP REPORT (Pdf) Submission for Parts 4 & 5: manual pavement design, optimised VAL design and analysis of EW report. • Date: Midnight on Monday 12th of October (week 10) • Marks allocated = 25 4. INDIVIDUAL Submission for Part 6; Electronic files of final design in AutoCAD CSD: • Date: Midnight on Monday 12th of October (week 10) • Marks allocated = 5 AutoCAD CSD topics 1. Week 6: Input manual HAL design and a typical cross-section in CSD and produce existing longitudinal profile along the route to use for VAL manual design. 2. Week 8: Input manual VAL design in CSD and produce initial EW report. 3. Week 9: In CSD, input outputs of manual pavement design, superelevation, optimise VAL design and produce final EW, longitudinal profile and cross-sections. Consultations with CSS staff and Tutors • Once you submit the manual designs of Parts 1 & 2 on Sunday 6/9 you should start immediately working on inputting your design into AutoCAD CSD to produce the long profile along your designed route. You have 2 days ONLY (7&8 Sept) to post your questions (if any) for CSS staff. • The same applies to Part 3 manual design, where you have 2 days ONLY (28 & 29 Sept) to input your design in CSD and prepare your questions (if any) for posting.
