Ethical business practices are important criteria in the modern era to achieve success in the market. The importance of business ethics deals with several factors, which provide benefits to a company. The following points are the factors, which are derived from business ethics. These business ethics helps in making better decision by the group or individual person in a given organisation, increase profitability of company, increase loyalty of company toward the consumers and ethics in business can provide protection to the society than legislative power of the country. This assignment deals with business ethics of Woolworths in Australia. In the current situation of the global market, Woolworths in Australia follows the rules of ethical business to show their honesty and integrity in order to improve their fairness towards customers and ensuring them loyalty.
Summary of the ethical issues of Woolworths in Australia
Woolworths have been enjoying serious levels of profit, because of their different activities and businesses. They have been involved in the supermarket chain businesses accompanied with the gaming services in the form of Poker games that have been inclined more towards the gambling. Additionally, Woolworths have been engaged in liquor services. Here, the customers that played Poker and engaged in gambling were also provided with drinks free of cost. Many unethical issues have been observed in Woolworths including gambling, poker machines, and pubs. Most of the staffs are instructed to provoke gamblers with foods and drinks for increased levels of gambling. This has allowed the customers to be more attracted towards them in order to have the free drink while engaging them in gambling (McMurrian & Matulich, 2016).
Provoking for gambling of the customers in the supermarket is an unethical issue, which has a negative effect on the marketing sector and on the society of Australia. As the company provokes the customers, the customers spend huge amount of money during gambling because of their unawareness. Because of these unethical activities, many of the ethical investors have declined from making long-term investments in Woolworths. Because of these activities, Woolworths has decided to have a separate wing for their tertiary activities and named it “Endeavour Business”. This had a lower amount of purchase rate in terms of the investment for the investors. However, it may allow Woolworths to engage in long-term investments by the ethical investors. Additionally, the Endeavour business may also be subjected to a large amount of short-term investments from other investors.
