Complex Instruction Set Computer is abbreviated as CISC. These chips are easy to program and make
efficient use of memory. Here single instructions can deploy several low level operations and are
capable of performing multiple operations. Designers realized that CISC suffered from various difficulties
and they examined that a series of simple instructions can produce the same result of these complex
instructions and it can be with a similar hardware design which resulted in an implementation of RISC.
RISC is an enhanced version of CISC. Reduced Instruction Set Computer is abbreviated as RISC. It is a
UNIX operating System and is developed by MIPS Computer Systems. It is a microprocessor that realizes
a relatively limited number of instructions.
Main Characteristics of RISC are:
 Less Complex, Simple Instructions
 Minimized Instruction Set
 Few addressing modes for memory operands containing only two simple instructions “LOAD and
STORE”.
 Symmetric Registers that are organized into Register file.
 Simple Machine instructions and Hardwired Control Unit System.
