The growth has been brought about in counseling and secularism again came into sight in the 20th century, while in 21st the focus of counseling is on involvement which is delicate to many cultural faces in the lives of clients. Competency of multiculturalism is embraced by the professionals in counseling and remedy, spirituality and faith becomes the cultural factors that are important part of drafting people’s faiths, behavior, worth, experiences and patterns of illness. In spite of the fact that significance of religion and spirituality is becoming pervasive and is continually growing, psychologists deal with issues of religions and spirituality with little knowledge.
Definition
The idea of religion and spirituality often get exchanged and overlaps each other. However, it has been declared by many professionals of psychology that both ideas are non-identical and different from each other. Religion has been defined as well ordered faith system including institutionalized and shared moral worth, faith in gods and participation in religion communities. Spirituality on the other hand is a sense of connection to something bigger than us (Stewart‐Sicking, Deal and Fox 2017). This may or may not involve relationships with gods. Spirituality consists of three fundamental elements: link with something or someone bigger than us, sense of sympathy for others, and enthusiasm in mankind. Based on these explanations, it can be recognized that religion is an experience of social-level while spirituality is an independent experience. As these two notions are interrelated and overlap, different degrees of both the clients are seen by the counselors.
Religiosity has been defined as religiousness that is faith or belief in religion. In order to discuss this purpose, both the concepts of religion and spirituality are described by expression religiosity (Zinnbauer et al. 2015).
Individuals may be categorized as either religious or spiritual, both spiritual and religious or neither religious nor spiritual. In many times, only the spiritual person seeks meaning, relation with others and absoluteness. But the religious individual takes part in religious organizations; possess theistic faiths, institutionalized ethical values. The person of both religious and spiritual have both the features whereas, the person with neither religious nor spiritual don’t carry any of these features (Sagaser et al. 2016).
Religion and Health
Religious and spirituality can have healing value in counseling in a large scale which counselors are helped by the incorporation in order to assist clients for connection with others, leaving the comfort zone, donation to the basic good (Gladding a nd Crockett 2019). Religious individuals involve in social gatherings and community activities take part in social relations. On the other hand, spiritual person takes parts in innovative activities, personal development activities, creating awareness activities. Religious individuals are encouraged better by the counselors because of these positive approaches, and clients’ health can be contributed.
Both spirituality and religion has their individual effect on dealing with stress. According to the clients belief in religion and spirituality, the distressed conditions in their life is determined which offers a value to their lives, and provides them a greater awareness to deal with the conditions by establishing self-confidence. During the times of stress, clients can use religious organizations through the allocation of community and a sense of individuality (Scott and Sacco 2020). There are also other religious sources recognized utilized at the time of stress including believe in God, advice from clergymen, prayers, solitary deeds, that represents spiritual, behavioral, cognitive and social outlook of faith. According to the evidence, these various overcome resources of spiritual and religions helps different groups of people. When the impact of religion and spirituality is looked beyond economic lines, the people whose salary lesser than the average, religiosity is the resource of the health. Religion was a medium of consolation and comfort to the clients diagnosed with psychiatric and supplies materials handle stress, search a sense of completeness, and social support is increased.
People carrying identity of healthy spiritual cures rapidly and succeeds in establishing lifestyles in a good physical condition. A healthy spiritual individual feels relations with Gods, feels self-confidence, have motive in life and capable of fulfilling greater possibilities (Adams et al. 2015).
