The Aztecs
1. What did the Aztecs call themselves?
The Aztecs named their city as Tenochtitlan as they called themselves as Tenochca. They were also called as Mexica. Seldom had they called themselves as Aztecs (Thayer Watkins; 2008).
2. Who was the patron deity of the Aztecs?
Huitzilopochtli was the patron deity of Aztecs. Huitzilopochtli is originally the patron god of the Mexica tribe. But, Huitzilopochtli was little importance to the Nahuas. But, it was the rise of Aztecs E
mpire; Tlacaelel reformed their own culture and religion and worshipped Huitzilopochtli as sun god by putting him at equivalent level to Tlaloc, Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca (New York: Paulist Press, 1980).
3. A. What city was at the center of the Aztec universe?
The city that was located at the center of the Aztec was Teotihuacan. It is an ancient Mesoamerican city which is situated in the sub valley of the Valley of Mexico. It is a largest city in the pre-Columbian America with a population of 125000. This city was founded by the Mexica after they were ordered by Huitzilopochtli to leave Aztlan which were their homeland (National Geographic, 1996).
3. B. What edifice was at the center of that center?
Tenochtitlan was constructed symmetrically and there were four sectors segregated by four canals which surrounded the central area. Thus, at the center it was the Huitzilopochtli temple which was built and was the temple of gods and the palaces of the rulers were set (National Geographic, 1996).
4. Why are parts of Mexico City sinking?
The Mexico City is sinking as a result of the geological phenomenon which is called subsidence. This occurs when too much of water is drawn from the underground and the surface above it begins to get compact. As per the modelling conducted by two researchers it was found that the city was sinking as much as 20 inches per year (Matt Simon, 2021).
The Columbian Exchange
5. Why is the image of the "grossly stereotypical American Indian" on horseback something that could not have happened before the Columbian Exchange?
The traveller from Europe never saw a catfish in America. Neither the Native Americans saw a horse. There was a concept of the human beings to make the world and the living things living in the world biologically extraordinary. Thus, the Colombia Exchange has personified the animal population. Thus, it was a crosspollination which made the image of a gross stereotypical American Indian on horseback (The Columbian Exchange: Crash Course World History #23).
6. Why was it impossible to have a slice of pizza before the Columbia Exchange?
The old explorers in America brought horses. Upon returning to their homes they took tomatoes with them which were a new vegetable for the old explorers. This is because tomatoes were grown in America. Thus, had the tomatoes not been transferred to the old explorers there would not have been popular Italian pizza dishes. Thus, had it been the year 1491 in the old world and there was Columbia Exchange, pizza would not have been found due to unavailability of tomatoes (Images.pcmac.org).
7. How did the Columbian Exchange benefit the Irish?
The Columbian Exchange was sufficient with staple crops like potatoes, corn, and secondary crops like tomatoes. Potatoes came to Ireland and were a vital food source in the 19th century. It was also during the Irish Potato Famine in 1840’ and 1850’s there were mass starvation and emigration from Ireland. Thus, the import of potatoes in Ireland from Columbian Exchange benefitted the Irish to satisfy their needs (Elias Beck, 2016).
8. Look at the lyrics to "Take Me Out to the Ball Game"
It is a 1908 Pan Alley song by Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer. This lyric became the official anthem of the National American Baseball team. The lyrics are as follows:
Katie Casey was baseball mad,
Had the fever and had it bad.
Just to root for the home town crew,
Every sou1
Katie blew.
On a Saturday her young beau
Called to see if she'd like to go
To see a show, but Miss Kate said "No,
I'll tell you what you can do:"
Chorus
Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd;
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack,
I don't care if I never get back.
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don't win, it's a shame.
For its one, two, three strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game
9. Based on what the video says, approximately how many Native Americans died as a result of diseases brought by Europeans?
