Library Exercise: Longleaf pine savanna understory Overview: Today you are learning how to find and identify primary literature sources. For your LLP Written report, you will be required to include at a minimum four peer reviewed journal articles. In this exercise you will find 4 potential articles and utilize these articles to answer some short questions. These 4 articles could be the articles you use in your final report although they do not have to be. Key Goals: 1. Find 4 primary literature sources. 2. Cite the sources appropriately in a Literature Cited. 3. Summarize key findings from the sources that you might be able to use in your final paper and do in text references. A. Basic Information: Correct citation format is imperative. Below are some examples of how to site different things Journal Articles: Clewell, A.F. 1989. Natural history of wiregrass (Aristida stricta Michx., Graminae). Natural Areas Journal. 9:223-233. Diemer, J.E. 1986. The ecology and management of the gopher tortoise in the southeastern United States. Herpetelogica. 42:125-133. Mitchell, R.J., L.K. Kirkman, S.D. Pecot, C.A. Wilson, B.J. Palik, and L.R. Boring. 1999. Patterns and controls of ecosystem function in longleaf pine - wiregrass savannas. I. Aboveground net primary productivity. Canadian Journal of Forest Research. 29(6): 743-751. Book Chapter (Note - a book is not a primary literature source – it will not count to your 4 sources, but still might be needed): Jose, S., E.J. Jokela, and D.L. Miller. 2007. "The longleaf pine ecosystem." The Longleaf Pine Ecosystem. Springer, New York, NY. p3-8. Notes: Nowhere in the citation do you include the website or the day you accessed the article. To cite a source appropriately in text you must include reference to the source after you say something that you gained from that source. For example, you might want to use one of the following sentences: Although once one of the most extensive ecosystems in North America, only a fraction of these LLP savannas remains today (Jose et al. 2007). Note: The sentence written above has been written in my own words – not copied directly as a quote – you should not use quotes! “Jose” is the last name of the first author. “et al.” means that there were multiple co-authors (if there are just one or two list their names “Jose & Jokela”). “et al.” should always be in italics as it is Latin. “2007” is the year in which the source was published. This will allow any reader to flip to your literature cited section and figure out where that information came from. Wiregrass, Aristida stricta, is a native perennial grass species found in North and South Carolina (Clewell 1989). LLP savannas have many endemic animals (Diemer 1986) making their restoration and conservation of great importance. B. Assignment: Answer 3 of the following 6 questions using at least 4 primary literature sources. Your answers should be typed and a maximum of 150 words. You may use additional sources to answer the questions such as a book chapter, but that will not count towards your 4 primary literature sources. Do NOT cite website URLs. Use relevant information to answer the questions, cite sources in your answers, and give full citations at the end of the entire assignment as a “Literature Cited” section. Be careful not to plagiarize. 1. How diverse is the understory plant community in LLP savannas? What type of plants are found there (focus on NC)? 2. How is the frequency of heatwaves expected to change in the future? What about for the Southeast specifically? 3. How does a lack of water and high heat influence grass physiology? 4. How does climate change influence restoration? This can be an example from anywhere but would be most relevant if from the Southeast or a grassland ecosystem. 5. What factors influence herbaceous understory diversity in LLP savannas? Please type your answers up in a separate word document but include the Question itself in the turned in portion. This assignment is worth 5% of your final grade. Each question will be worth 1/5th of the total and the literature cited will be 2/5th. You will be graded not only on correct citation format and on the appropriate selection of literature to support your answers, but also on your answers being correct and complete. 1
