Journalism Event Report: Image by Western Sydney University. On the 21st of April, journalism students at Western Sydney University had the opportunity to listen to the beautiful journey of two successful and hard-working journalists, Suzanne Dredge and Brogan Anlezark, to their career. Both of them had a positive and inspiring story that shows their commitment, dept of investigation on their tasks, and responsibility for what they wanted to report to the people. Suzanne Dredge is a journalist and multi-Platform producer with ABC’s investigation unit. She worked as a Wiradjuri woman, Koori Radio, and she presented the station’s flagship. Brogan Anlezark is Government and Cluster Relations Program Manager of NSW Transport. Both of them graduated from Western Sydney University, where they received lots of support from tutors to build their career. Suzanne’s investigation of the ISIS camp in the Middle East was inspiring. She shared her experience of how a journalist should build relationships with people who want to be part of their report, gain their trust to talk to you openly and be patient about your work because she has a five-year journey with the ISIS camp report. Suzanne’s life story showed how people could turn challenging experience into a bright future with the use of every single opportunity. Also, Brogan Anlezark said she had a hard time studying because she was not interested in Journalism. Still, she showed her dedication to what she studied. She did not miss opportunities until she found a job with NSW transport, which she loves to work there. Her report to the media during the COVID-19 was amazing, showing how a journalist should be responsible to their community and people awareness. At last, as Fiona Towney said, media has the power to influence people and lead the audience mind to positive or negative way about a topic, place, or group of people. This event was a delightful opportunity to hear from journalists who could rich their goals by many efforts. References: Western Sydney University. (2021). This subject was entirely different from all other subjects that I studied during my journalism course. With this subject, I could build my skills as a reporter, filmmaker, editor. Also, I could publish in different platforms. With this subject, I understand a journalist’s efforts to produce a report and collect information to make aware of the people about the latest news. In the first project, a radio bulletin, I learned how to deliver a complete message in a time limit with a short paragraph. Although I was struggling to catch the time limit, I could finally manage my news within the time, record and publish in different media properly. My second project was a video report about the Persian new year. While I wanted to interview people, I approach many Persians in NSW, but they refused to give an interview; most of them said they couldn’t speak English. Finally, I could manage to interview two people. In this project, I used some footage from Afghani TV called “Tolo TV” when I published my video on my Facebook, they blocked my video because of a small part of the video which belongs to them. I learned from this project that don’t leave a video recording until a few days to the deadline because you don’t know you will find someone to interview. Second, don’t use any footage from a big TV that could block your publication. The third project was about the Lakemba Ramadan Market, which was good; the people supported giving you an interview. Here I learned from my first project. First, I talked to them to build trust and then asked for an interview. In Digital Journalism Production, I experience working on different platforms, which was new for me. We were required to have a website, Facebook page, Twitter and YouTube accounts. These social networks and multimedia helped me improve my skills professionally. I learned the world of blogging and its benefits. I learned how to design a website, publish a post, and link my social media to the website. As a journalist, it is essential to work in the online industry because it connects you with experts to improve your career in the future. Nowadays, people prefer to read online news because they can access it easily everywhere on their smartphones. With the usage of multimedia, Digital platforms have changed news consumption, distribution, and production. Journalists have unprecedented access to their users. Put them closer to the story idea and news content which they care about. People are no longer waiting to hear news from TV, radio or daily newspaper. They are on their Facebook and Twitter accounts. They read and share their friends and families’ stories, sometimes, even before a journalist picked it up. With the multimedia, people interact with the journalists and other people, and even they can provide their feedback. For instance,Twitter is a microblogger platform that everybody can access anywhere with an internet connection, and 70 percent of journalist use it as their valuable social network. Because it is straight to the point, people can still access the text, photos, and video links of politicians' information like Donald Trump, who mostly shared his decisions via Twitter. On the other hand, sometimes, people cannot trust the reliability of every one’s news pulications until they didn’t see their trusted channel logo. In conclusion, what I learned from Digital Journalism Production is the usage of multimedia and different platforms that will help me succeed in my career. I have the website portfolio that I shared videos, audio and text. Also, I gained the ability to make news and broadcast. References: Wilding, D. (2018).
