eodore Roethke’s magnum opus My Papa’s Waltz was published in the year 1942. The poem is an esoteric venture embarked upon an itinerary by a child who is subsumed by the dance as well as the menace happening at the time. The dance is waltz which is very rhythmic inundated by the mellifluousness of lightness, though the poet touches upon the relationship in between the father and the son. However, at the surface level it appears to function as something which is charming and yet very rowdy. There is an uneasiness that takes place in between the father and the son and eventually propagates a tension as they dance during the midnight. In the poem, the poet calls it as “romp” – it signifies the dubiousness ousting out of the waltz. This can be well conceived by the dancing which is deemed to be unsteady though there is a little bit of tender rhapsody. The dance transforms their movement into a broken melody which can be well understood by the ending of the poem. When his father carries him to the bed, he says, “a sweet ending to this late-night rendezvous.”
The subtlety has been infused in the poem from the very onset which is indicative of the suggestions undermining the picture that is yet a happy one. The very inception...
