Theory of Human freedom
Some issues in the world inhibit human freedom which questions their thought process
and the implications of those thoughts. The freedom to think, research and act according to one’s
thoughts has been questioned since centuries across the world. Most of the human freedom is
smothered in sci
entific community that does not confine its thought process according to the held
beliefs, social norms or ethics.
According to them the research knows no boundary unless it directly affects someone’s
interests and wellbeing. One such issue if of the issue of stem cell research that has sparked the
debate among religious figures and the scientific community like no other technology related
issues has in the past. The issue involves controversies cropping up due to the ethical dilemma
faced by the scientific communities over the philosophical view point. The controversy basically
emanates from the ethical problem that stem cell research requires creation, treatment and
destruction of the embryos. As far as importance of the issue to mankind is concerned, there have
been several evidences like survey results where more than 60 percent of respondents reported
that the issue was either “very important” or “somewhat important” to them. As mentioned
previously, most part of the opposition is from the religious and orthodox elites who believe that
it involves killing of the human embryo necessarily.
One of community member who used to believe in the above mentioned premise of the
ethical issues related to the stem cell had to let go of the values and principle he and his family
followed to save his child. He was against the stem cell research only because he believed that
embryo has to be intruded with the obtrusive instruments. The person used to be against the
fundamentals of stem cell research but had to compromise against his wish when he had to go
through the pain of watching his son suffer from T-cell lymphoma when he was one year old.
The child had this terminal disease which would take his life in few years. The only way he
could be treated was to obtain cord blood stem transplant using the cells from his younger sibling
when he was in embryonic stage. The parents tried to save the child with various other
treatments like chemotherapy which did not receive any response from the child and thus the
only thing which was left was to go for the engraftment and the transplant. The doctors
performed the procedure of collecting the cord blood cells approximately two months prior to the
transplant when the younger sibling was an embryo. The use of cord blood stem cells is a
complex procedure which can treat life threatening diseases like leukemia and lymphomas. The
stem cells obtained have clear advantages as compared to the bone marrow in matching and less
severe graft versus host disease known as GVHD. Due to these issues, the parents decided to go
for the stem cell harvesting from their younger child even when it was a life changing decision
for them.
The community members also played a negative role in making an already tough decision
eve tougher. Many people were just dead against the fact that...
