Moderate Democrat Intro Speech  Written by: Melany Martinez, Kimiko Sandig  America has been experiencing a drought — a political one that has run under the radar  for years. A drought called representation. Currently, there are 120 minority members in  the 116th Congress and that’s a record for the United States. However, I believe America  can do better than that; after all, women comprise more than 50% and minorities  comprise at least 40% of the population. My name is Kristina Castillo Gapp and I am here  to bridge the gap between women and Congress, Americans and their rights, and  ultimately, citizens and the government.    As a first-generation Asian-American, I have witnessed first-hand the hardships that  minorities face in our society. For most immigrants, the United States is the land of  opportunity — the “American Dream” as you all know it. Unfortunately, that is still a  pipedream for the greater half of the country. I will change that.    Other candidates may bring up the fact that my experience and age may be a bad thing but  I don't think 35 is too bad! Neither my age nor my experience should be an issue. I have  served as a public defender for Los Angeles County for nearly 10 years. Additionally, I had  been in the Los Angeles Committee as a chairwoman. For the past two years, I have been  the representative of the 50th District of California as an assembly member of the state.  Accompanied by my willingness and determination to create better opportunities for the  people — by means of coordinating the base minimum wage with our current economy,  closing the gender income gap, and broadening the work resources for US residents — I  would argue that I am more than qualified to be your representative.    Working as a public defender has opened my eyes to the damage our current criminal  justice system does to individuals, especially their families. If we want to invest in the  future, we should aim to discourage the incarceration of children and recidivism. Putting  forth programs that rehabilitate and educate individuals is the way forward.     Not only that, but I am also going to take action about the pressing issues that our country  is facing today: healthcare and climate change. As we’ve seen in this trying time, we need a  better healthcare system — one that will protect everyone and for healthcare workers to  be entitled to more protection. I want to share the progress we have had in California  regarding policies addressing climate change to the rest of the country and to raise  climate change awareness and literacy.     Friends and family, America has a lot of issues. But it’s not too late to pick them up and  remove them before they solidify and become what the United States is going to be  known for. We have had a lot of progress here in California and I want to extend that  progress with the rest of the country. In the same way, I will continue paving a path for a  Moderate Democrat Intro Speech  Written by: Melany Martinez, Kimiko Sandig  better life for Californians. I love the state and I believe that we can do better. That’s why I  am here; I’m here to represent you, whose voices aren’t being heard and you, the people,  who deserve a better life in America. Once again, I am Kristina Gapp and I am here to  bridge the gap.     Republican Platform (Jessica Jackson) Climate Change: As republicans, we support the use and development of all forms of energy that their costs don´t affect the pockets of our fellow Americans. We explore every possibility that can help bring the lowest rates of energy to each of the U.S. citizens across our country, funding experiments that could make a cleaner form of energy. As a party with a sole vision for the future of this great nation, we recognize that by investing in these types of energy we can maintain our workforce, resources, creating opportunities not only for the USA but as a potential seller of energy for other countries, feeding the economy and making a stronger image. We endorse legislation that will make the process faster and easier to execute to any project, with the right verifications, that could bring coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear power, and hydropower energy in a safe space that can contribute to maintaining the cost of this vital service to a minimum. Gun Control: We defend people's right to keep and bear arms, which precedes the Constitution and was solemnly confirmed by the Second Amendment. We recognize, respect, and protect the God-given right to self-defense to law-abiding citizens. We endorse legislation that will exercise the constitutional right of self-defense anywhere a law-abiding person has a lawful right to be, by enabling anyone with state-issued carry licenses to carry handguns in any state that grants such permits. Gay Marriage: As Republicans, we believe it is important to protect marriage against an activist judiciary. We would like to defend marriage by following our legal traditional marriage between a man and a woman. By doing this, we can protect our culture and also represent the freedom of our society as well. We also reject any Supreme Court’s decision that encourages same-sex marriage. Immigration: We believe that a new system needs to be in place to ensure that immigrants who enter this country illegally are not provided with the same benefits that legal citizens are provided with because the involvement of illegal immigrants further allows potential immigrants to enter the country unlawfully rather than lawfully. Furthermore, the presence of millions of illegal immigrants in this area jeopardizes the country's security and sovereignty. As a result, our highest priority must be the security of our nation and all points of entry, as well as the enforcement of our immigration laws. In addition, when immigrants try to get in illegally, we don’t know who is entering (terrorists, drug cartels, human trafficking, and criminal gangs). Another major issue we face in our economy is a direct result of minor refugees because it eventually becomes our responsibility to provide them with food, clothing, and shelter and in most cases, minors who don't have a family member will come under the jurisdiction of the Office of Refugee Resettlement. This implies spending a large sum of money on them, which would be used for the betterment of the nation. Abortion: We are pro-life advocates, who will fight to protect the rights of the unborn. We will oppose any healthcare plan or initiative that uses taxpayer money to fund abortion. We will help to inform women on alternatives to unplanned pregnancies. Our agenda will consider exceptions, but only on a case-by-case basis where such procedures are critical. Marijuana Legalization: As a Republican, we believe that Marijuana should be legalized Because it's necessary to ensure individual liberty and protect States' rights. It will help benefit economically, create new jobs, and save money. If it was legal the government would be able to collect taxes against it and that would mean more money to be able to pay for other effective drug education programs and many other important causes. It's been proven that marijuana does not help the country in any way and has caused many problems. Taxes: As Republicans, we believe that there should be a reduction in taxes because the over-taxation that we are experiencing is affecting our economy. We believe that a tax cut will help the growth of the economy which will help create more job opportunities, it will also help attract more investors, companies, and it will increase the opportunity for future entrepreneurs to succeed. We believe in fair taxation for everyone that will help every family and business's income which will also help to have better relations with other countries when trading. Tax credits are another important factor on which we are going to focus as a party because this can be the path to make healthcare accessible for everyone. Healthcare: As republicans, we believe in a patient-centered health care system, which means “Providing care that is respectful of, and responsive to, individual patient preferences, needs and values, and ensuring that patient values guide all clinical decisions.” We strongly believe a health care system that is run by the government could not provide enough efficiency of care. We support the idea of people being able to make a choice of their own health cost through medical savings accounts or flexible savings accounts. We believe the more flexibility people have, the more effectively a patient can get care. Moreover, we believe in reformed medicare, which will help senior groups with more options. We would like to provide medicare for older Americans rather than groups at once.
