Introduction/Description
Homeschooling is on the rise. In the last thirty years, there has been an immense growth in the
numbers of kids not attending regular schools because their parents have decided that it would be
better for them to learn at home it. According to rough estimates approximately 1.1 Million
children are being homeschooled in United States and about 60,000 children are being
homeschooled in Canada which are steadily growing. This only asserts one thing that,
Homeschooling is something that a lot of parents stand by in countries like United States and
Canada at least and that it is increasing steadily.
Homeschooling is essentially a parent dedicated education. Homeschooling can occur in the
kitchen, bedroom or a spare room and can be conducted by both of the parents or any single. It
may not necessarily follow the exact same curriculum as that of a private school or public
school. Parents are free to choose the curriculum, the difficulty level, the number of hours they
want to input and even their testing practices. The parents sometimes may involve others which
will help them in homeschooling their kids. There are a lot of reasons behind Homeschooling
because of which the parents choose this alternative. Some are driven by their religious beliefs,
some believe that curriculum is not enough and some believe that the school might be too
limiting for their kids.
Reasons behind homeschooling
There are several reasons as to why parents may choose to opt their kids to be homeschooled
among those the following three reasons are the most prominent and common.
Ineffective Curriculum:
The first reason is that the parents think that curriculum in public and private school are lacking.
However this is not extensively researched in the context of Canada but rather in USA, however
a similarity has been drawn which attests that even in Canada this is a valid and popular reason
for homeschooling kids. In general, parents do not like the curriculum of the school that they find
it misleading or perhaps incomplete or ineffective. These parents can be classified as
“ideologues” according to Van Galen’s theoretical framework as they are ones who embrace a
different ideology altogether rather the one expressed in the curriculum.
Religious beliefs:
The second most prominent reason as to why parents prefer their children to be homeschooled is
that they belief the school educational system is godless or religion less. These parents are not
happy with the fact that the school does not maintain a religious ground and or are ineffective or
insufficient in this respect. These people can be categorized as “pedagogues” because they
believe that the structure of education is quite “pedagogically” unsound. These parents believed
that many schools did not provide enough or right kind of religious education and that they were
lacking on instilling religious beliefs among the students. Several parents attested that liberal
