Abstract
Most foods nowadays have an increased amount of sugar, for both taste and preservation purposes. Most people consume more sugar they did now than they did 5 years ago. The amount of sugar in the bodies of people keep increasing. The sugar has been known to cause problems in the consumer. Two of those problems – increased risk of heart disease and increased acne and premature ageing are discussed in the following paper. Solutions that are practical are also discussed.
Introduction
Most foods these days have an increased amount of sugar. This could be due to the increased amount of processed foods and coffee chains like Starbucks, and the increased in fast-food chains like McDonald’s investing in beverages. This increased use of sugar can be harmful to the health of the consumers. There are many problems that are caused by the increased use of sugar in food and beverages. Two of the problems, and their possible solutions have been researched and analysed in this report.
Findings
Increased Risk of Heart Disease
There has been evidence that suggests that an increased amount of sugar can lead to obesity, a high triglyceride content in the food, inflammation in the arteries, which are risk factors of heart disease. There was a study that had been conducted with over 30,000 people. The study found that those who consumed 17-21% calories from sugar had an increased chance of up to 38% of getting heart disease (Kearns, et al, 2016).
Increased risk of acne and premature ageing
Foods that have increased sugar also have a high glycaemic index. This is known to increase the risk of developing acne in the body. Foods that have a large amount of sugar in them have been known to spike blood sugar levels, increase the insulin levels in the body.
