Introduction
Globally the public health challenges are most acute in Africa, especially sub-Saharan
Africa. Populated with 13 percent of world’s total population, sub-Saharan Africa is burdened
with 24 per cent of the world’s total diseases. Poor health care facilities due to poverty, internal
conflicts, underdevelopment, ill managed government adds to the woes (Cooke, 2009). To help
ease these problems, this region demands sustained support from international bodies. Epidemic
of infectious tropical diseases is common. Malnutrition and HIV/ AIDS are widespread.
Maternal healthcare is extremely poor. The outbreak of HIV/Aids in the last ten years led to the
creation of new global institutions like UNAIDS to set up new units to address the health issues
in Africa. This essay reflects the social problems in Africa with focus on the health issues.

HIV/ AIDS
Africa is most affected by HIV/ Aids pandemic globally. 67 percent of the world’s total
HIV affected population is in Africa. 70 percent of the deaths from HIV worldwide are from this
region (Cooke, 2009). Statistics reveal more shocking data. 90 percent of the world’s total
population of children affected by AIDS is in Africa and majority of the new infected cases
globally are reported in Africa, both in children and women(Cooke, 2009). The epidemic varies
from one region to another in Africa. For instance, the sub Saharan Africa is the most affected
region. Whereas in the West Africa, the spread of HIV is very low and the rate has started to
lower down. The eastern region is almost reaching a plateau (Cooke, 2009). The treatments
required remained long unavailable to the majority of the Africans. According to the data from
the World Health Organization, out of the entire affected population, only thirty percent have
received treatments. Due to poverty, poor health care facilities and inaccessibility, majority of
population are deprived of the treatments, even the low cost options of treatment. It is observed
that the HIV patients are developing resistances towards the existing first level of drugs. This
would indicate the requirement of more complex treatments at higher costs. These costs have to
be shared among the global organizations. Moreover lack of prevention measures leads to
reporting of new cases of HIV infections (Cooke, 2009).
Tuberculosis
Africa has the highest rate of Tuberculosis (TB) incidence with highest per capita TB
