Running head: SHORTENED TITLE1 SHORTENED TITLE3 Psychological Effects of Poverty Karen Battie ENG122: English Composition II Instructor: Nancy Matasci 9 April 2018 Psychological affects of Poverty Poverty can have a very negative impact psychologically on those who are not able to cope with every day circumstances that may arise in their lives. According to statistics, over 14.8 percent of people who live in the United States, live in poverty. Poverty in the United States is on the increase (Varghese, 2016). Based on research, it showed that poverty is a serious problem in the United States that has socially psychological effects. Young children who live in poor segregated neighborhoods are affected the most. Based on research, children that live in poverty stricken neighborhoods, well -being and development are affected (Bruner, 2017). Many children that live in poverty stricken neighborhoods don’t have running water or electricity. Many people that live in poverty do not know how their next meal will be provided. In many cases people are left homeless and are living on the streets because of a lack of room in some shelters. All of these factors can cause mental health issues (Bruner, 2017). Based on studies that were conducted, the study showed that Social Workers made decisions based off a person’s social status instead of their medical needs. Studies proved that Social Workers treated people that live in poverty different from those that didn’t live in poverty. When people are mistreated because of their social status, this can cause psychological problems. This study was conducted on 225 licensed Social Workers (Levin & Schwartz-Tayri, 2017). Research showed that poverty has an effect on the brain. Research also showed that people who live in poverty has more stress on their brain than those who do not live in poverty. Studies also showed that people that live in poverty can cause severe psychological problems with the brain. Stress and poverty co-exist. Living in poverty not only causes psychological problems, but it also causes chronic stress, high blood pressure and diabetes (Durbin, 2012). As a whole it is important for society to come together to help those that live in poverty by Educating them about the multiple programs that are available to them in their community. Because many people suffer from psychological problems, they may not be capable of helping Themselves. No child should have to live with the psychological stress of worrying about their Every day necessities in life (Dobrin, 2012). References Bruner, C. (2017).
