Introduction
Gender roles in human society is a very common thing. It means the expectations that a society holds over the different genders to function, in different areas of life. Gender roles, as mentioned by Clinton, Catherine, and Nina Silber, varies from tribe to tribe, religion to religion, and region to region. But in majority of the cases, we see a specific type of gender role. That is, if we look around, most of the religions, communities, races or regions have a very patriarchal system, when it comes to gender. We can, hence, witness, men holding an authority over the main segments of life and being the one in “power”. Men are generally expected to be strong, aggressive, and bold and hence they are expected to deal with the outside world. While women, as mentioned by Clinton, Catherine, and Nina Silber, are limited to doing household chores and take care of the children. Although this is not the same everywhere. In some regions, matriarchy also exists, while some other are fairly equal while dealing with men and women. Here, in this essay we are going to discuss how gender roles varies in African American men and women.
