History 130: The Modern Middle East Short Paper Instructions Professor Hanania Please prepare a research paper of 6-8pp (double spaced using a 12 point font) on one of the following topics OR on an approved topic of your choosing: 1. The Origins of the Arab Spring in either Tunisia, Egypt, Syria or Libya 2. Globalization in the Middle East 3. The Lebanese Civil War 4. The Rise of Islam 5. The Origins of the Sunni-Shia Split 6. The Umayyads 7. Science during the Abassid Era 8. Britain’s Role in Creating the Modern Middle East 9. The Rise of Hizbollah 10. The Rise of Hamas 11. The Impact of the Iranian Revolution on Arab Politics 12. The Role of Oil in Middle East Politics 13. The Role of the United States in the Middle East under a particular administration 14. A Middle East Conflict (e.g. the 1948 War, the 1967 War, the 1973 War, etc) 15. Arab Nationalism under Abdel Nasser Your paper should contain citations and footnotes. You should consult at least 2-3 secondary sources and at least 1 primary source. The paper should contain an introduction that states the topic and a thesis statement posing and addressing a particular problem and introducing a line of argumentation. This should be followed by a body that contains the major facts about your topic, the major pieces of evidence you are utilizing to support your argument, and the reasoning behind your line of argumentation. Finally, you should end with a conclusion that addresses the long-term ramifications of your topic’s significance. The paper is due in class on 4/29/19. I will only accept a hard copy. The sheets have to be stapled and numbered.
