Orientation
Orientation Process at Service Foods Limited
Orientation is a process, by which the human resource management department of the organisation inducts and places a newly recruited employee in their workplace. According to Rodriguez, Peterson and Ajjan (2015), it is an administrative process held after the recruitment and selection of the eligible candidate are done, which helps these employees complete their essential documentation as well as be aware with their salary schemes or any other benefits. I have recently completed my internship at Service Foods Limited that is situated in New Zealand.
I was selected for this internship after a rigorous recruitment process, which made me very nervous regarding how the experience here would be for me. However, to my surprise, all my tension was eased on the very first day only when I joined the family business, as it was initiated with a very warm and cordial orientation process. Firstly, I have given a letter of job acceptance as well as some other important documents to sign on, followed by an official welcome by my manager amongst all the other interns and subordinate employees. Then I was taken to visit the office area of Service Foods Limited. Since it is a privately-operated, family business and distribution departmental office area was my concerned reporting place; hence, I also got the chance to know their familial approach to distribution while visiting the organisation.
Furthermore, I was introduced to all the concerned personnel, who are or would be directly related to the project, where I was interning, which helped to know my team. As supported by Lu, Lin, Lu and Siu (2015), when a new recruit is made accustomed with the people, environment and equipment, with which they would work every day, they feel liable to be associated with their organisation, due to inculcating a sense of oneness with their workplace. On the second day, my manager explained to me about my daily agenda, job tasks allocated to me, my reporting time, departing time, workplace decorum, payroll process, leave application procedure and all the other benefits that I would receive from this organisation, during my internship with them. I was subjected to understanding my job role and activities for the first week and I also came to know that all the new staff members are oriented along this same process only. It has proven to be quite helpful for new recruits.
My Understanding of the Organisation and its Operations by my Internship’s First Week
On the first week of my Industry Project internship period, my manager helped me a lot to be accustomed with the organisation and its working procedure. He understood my nervousness and the awe of the place that were clearly evident on my facial expressions. However, with his thorough guidance and compassion, I could not only overcome my fears, but also imbibe as much of knowledge I could regarding my job role activities. Although I feel I did not understand the organisation or its operations completely in the very first week, I was warmly accepted by them as one of their family members only, which improved my understanding largely. With a vast working process and a week’s time quite short for it; I tried to inculcate as much as I could in order to fit in my job role actively.
Situational Reflection
There have been an ample number of instances, which have nurtured me as a person and learner during the entire journey of my Industry Project internship. However, three situations that I can select from these experiences, which completely enhanced my knowledge as an industrial intern, would be the following ones—
It was my first month in Service Foods Limited and I was only in the learning phase. I did not know the ways, in which the outsourcing process of the company goes because I was in the distribution department. Although I knew that in this company, the core business activities such as managing the sales and finances are undertaken by their family members only; however, I was not aware of the fact that the raw materials are also supplied from their own farms, where some of their family members conduct sustainable farming activities.
Therefore, once when the company...
