Microsoft Word - Lab 5 Environment in the Media - Biol 1001 W 2022 - Handout ^N2 BIOL 1001 Winter 2022 Lab 5—Handout #2 1 Zoom Session: Sharing Information with a Peer During your Zoom session your TA will split the class into breakout groups of 2 or 3 students. Each person within a group will take a few minutes (approximately 3 minutes per topic/article) and verbally describe the topic and article to his/her partner(s). Teach your partners about each of your two selected topics. Refer to your own notes in Handout #1. Do not just read the articles or your notes. When each partner has completed teaching you about a topic, write down three things you found most interesting (6 marks total) and one question you have (two marks total). Lab Partner #1 Name: Partner #1’s Topic One: Three points you found interesting Your question. - I thought it interesting that the heat waves that swept over western Canada last summer set a new high temperature record. - Heat waves are caused by factors other than climate change. - Such heat waves can create forest fires and heat-related illnesses. What can Canadian environmental groups or the government in particular do to reduce the likelihood of a heat wave as severe as this one? Alexander Di Foglio Heat waves and forest fires in British Columbia. BIOL 1001 Winter 2022 Lab 5—Handout #2 2 Partner #1’s Topic Two: Three points you found interesting Your question. If you are in a group of only 2 students, skip to “Critical Analysis” below Lab Partner #2 Name: Partner #2’s Topic One: Three points you found interesting - Thirteen beehives were placed in the Senate of Canada Building in Ottawa, housing 750,000 bees, and the honey collected was to be provided at a neighbouring hotel whose employees handled the hives. - In Canada, bee populations have been dropping due to factors such as loss of habitat and limited food supplies, as well as infestations, toxins, and diseases. - Bees are vital to the environment and our economy because they pollinate crops such as blueberries, and agricultural production in British Columbia and the United States have suffered because of fewer honeybees. What will happen to our economy and surroundings if the bee decrease in Canada and the United States does not slow down and continues to worsen? - Monsoons are common in Asia, which has a high pollution level. - They damage the ozone layer, which shields humans from UV rays. - A Canadian satellite system monitors monsoons, which release pollutants into the atmosphere as a result of Asia's high pollution levels. The declining number of bees in Canada. Kayla Lewis Air Pollution and the Ozone Layer BIOL 1001 Winter 2022 Lab 5—Handout #2 3 Your question. (partner #2, topic one) Partner #2’s Topic Two: Three points you found interesting Your question. Critical Analysis Media releases do a great service by informing the public of many community and world happenings, including those pertaining to biologically-related topics. You have probably noticed though, that media articles tend to be quite short and are typically not written by the person/people (e.g. researcher) directly involved. This means that there is a possibility that information has been left out (due to the restricted length) and/or misinterpreted through the reporting process. As a young biologist, who has access to the related primary literature, it is important to critically analyse information you read in non-reviewed media including newspapers, general magazines, and most Internet sites. Critical thinking is far more than being able to point out the negative features of something (a process we often associate with the word “critical”); rather this type of thinking is described as critical because it is essential and involves processes of reasoning and logic. Being able to analyse information is a skill that requires practise. It is something that you will likely not excel How would monsoons affect Canada if they happened here? Would it be any different from Asia in relation to the environment or anything similar? - Extreme weather events are beginning to become the new normal. - Lately, there have been fewer cold days than in the 1970s and 1980s. - Important components like crops may stop surviving in droughts or water supplies would reduce given the lack of snow due to unexpected weather changes.. Is this a problem with a solution? What can be done to restore normal weather conditions and prevent extreme weather shifts if it can be done? Climate change and Hazardous Weather BIOL 1001 Winter 2022 Lab 5—Handout #2 4 at immediately and like any other skill you will need to work on it. You will find that no matter what program you are in, developing your ability to critically analyse is very helpful and is a major goal of university programs. Choose one of your two newspaper articles. Which article did you choose? Earlier you wrote out one question that came to mind when reading this article. Now, after discussing the article with a peer, new questions may have occurred to you. Look at the article you have chosen again and write out two more questions you have regarding the material presented. Think about the following when formulating your questions. Was there any information that seemed to be missing that you would like to know about? Was there information, or were there any statements, in the article for which you would like clarification or more information? Example: if we were to look at the rusty crayfish article (found on the Laboratory eClass site under “Laboratory 5”), some questions that come to mind are: Which Wisconsin lakes contain the rusty crayfish and what is the size of each relative to the study lakes in Manitoba and Ontario? The article suggests that lake size is a factor contributing to success and population size, but are there other factors? The article suggests that otter and mink are the only predators of the rusty crayfish. Are the populations of these mammals elevated near lakes with an increased rusty crayfish population relative to those lakes without the rusty crayfish? You can see that learning new things raises additional questions. Question 1 (from last page of Handout #1) – only re-write if it will help you organize your thoughts Question 2 Invasive species in Canada What is somthnig beekeepers can do to protect North American honeybees from Asian giant hornets? How can beekeepers in North America get rid of Asian giant hornets, and does western Canada have any predators that can assist get rid of them like hornets do to honeybees? BIOL 1001 Winter 2022 Lab 5—Handout #2 5 Question 3 Now, choose one of your questions to investigate further. Which question did you choose? Locate Two Primary Journal Articles Relating to Your Question of Choice Using the literary search skills gained in this lab, locate two primary journal articles that address some aspect of your chosen question. Web of Science and Biological Abstracts are excellent library resources for this: https://researchguides.library.yorku.ca/c.php?g=679454&p=4792837. You will likely need to examine (quickly scan/read) more than two primary journal articles to find two that are appropriate (it is highly unlikely that the first two articles that appear on your search will be the ones you use). If your newspaper article refers to specific studies or researchers these may be used to aid in your journal article search, if they relate to your question. Note that it is unlikely you will find papers that directly address your particular question. You need to find related articles and extrapolate the information that is relevant to your question. If after an extensive search you cannot find two relevant journal articles, pick another question to address. Write the full citation of each chosen journal article below in CSE format (see the library’s website https://www.scientificstyleandformat.org/Tools/SSF-Citation-Quick-Guide.html for a review of how to do this for journal articles). You need this information as you will be referring back to these articles for your homework assignment. Also provide a brief summary, in your own words, of the material covered by each article. Remember, the point of this is to briefly summarise what is in the article and not re-write the paper or selected paragraphs. Example of a brief summary. Kelly et al. (2005) found that provision of the nutrient betaine to male mice deficient in the folate pathway enzyme MTHFR improved fertility in the mice. Journal Article 1 Citation (1 mark): What would happen to our economy and society if honeybees, which aid in crop pollination, were no longer present in Canada? 1 Bonnefond L, Paute S, Andalo C. 2021. Testing muzzle and ploy devices to reduce predation of bees
