Term Paper Instructions See Syllabus for Term Paper Due Date Objective Many Americans have an incomplete or even inaccurate understanding of the role that race and ethnicity play in the commission of crime and the criminal justice responses to those crimes. As future leaders in criminal justice and other professions, it is very important that you fully and accurately understand the true influence of race/ethnicity on some of the major crime and criminal justice issues that our country faces today. Unfortunately, we cannot dedicate as much time as we would like to every racial/ethnic group, nor every crime or criminal justice issue. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to allow you to study one specific racial/ethnic group (does not have to be your race/ethnicity) and one specific crime OR criminal justice issue (does not have to have been covered in class) that you find the most interesting that we may or may not spend a lot of time on in the classroom. By the time you complete this course and your paper, you should not only have a strong understanding of race, ethnicity, crime, and criminal justice in general, but a much better understanding of your primary race/ethnicity and crime or criminal justice issue as well. Instructions Your paper should include four (4) distinct sections (note: sections ≠ paragraphs). First, you should write an introduction with a thesis paragraph that describes the purpose of your paper. Your introduction should include a “hook” that will pique the reader’s interest. You should then include a thesis statement that clearly and explicitly identifies the purpose of your paper, including a brief discussion of why the race/ethnicity and crime or criminal justice issue you selected are important not only to you, but ( CRJU 3320 – Race, Ethnicity, & Criminal Justice ) the rest of society as well. In other words, you should justify why we need to know more about your selection. Finally, you should briefly outline the remainder of your paper. For your introduction and thesis statement paragraph, you should need less than 1 page. For the second section of your paper, you should identify and discuss the specific race or ethnicity that is the focus of your paper. In your discussion, you should clearly define which race/ethnicity you have chosen and explain why it is important that we have a better understanding of the members of that race/ethnicity. Then, you should briefly review the history of the race/ethnicity you selected in the US. Next, you should briefly review their current standing in the US today, including demographic characteristics. For example, you should describe their overall percentage of the US population, where they primarily reside (region/state, urban/rural, etc.), and their average age, family structure, income, education, etc. Additionally, you might also discuss any common customs that members of the race/ethnicity you selected share. Finally, you should review any of the common stereotypes about the race/ethnicity you selected. Information for this section of your paper should come from at least two scholarly resources, including peer-reviewed research articles and/or scholarly sources of statistics. More on how to find these resources will be discussed in class. For your review of the race/ethnicity you selected, you should need 2 to 3 pages. For the third section of your paper, you should identify and discuss the one crime OR criminal justice issue that most influences, or is influenced by, the race/ethnicity you selected. In order to do this, you should include four subsections: (1) define the crime or criminal justice issue, (2) discuss its history in the United States and why it is still an important issue today, (3) review the scope of the issue, and (4) identify and discuss how you think the issue could best be addressed. When you review the scope of your issue (Subsection 3), you should cover the history of the issue, how often the issue occurs, how people are affected by the issue, and how we are currently handling your issue (or why we are not handling it). But, it is the final subsection (Subsection 4) that will be the MOST IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR PAPER. How much effort you put into thinking and writing about how we can best address your issue will be the best illustration of how much you have learned in the class. Make sure you give this subsection serious thought and consideration! In order to complete each of these subsections, you will need to conduct some outside research on the issue you selected. Information for this larger section of your paper should come from at least five peer-reviewed research articles, NOT including scholarly sources of statistics (these may be used in addition to the four articles, but not in place of them). More on how to find these resources will be discussed in class. For your review of your crime or criminal justice issue, you should need 5 to 7 pages. For the fourth and final section of your paper, you should summarize the major points of interest in your paper. You should briefly restate your thesis statement and then review how Sections 2 & 3 of your paper support your thesis statement. Finally, you should conclude your paper by briefly discussing your current career plans and how the crime or criminal justice issue might directly affect your occupation. For your conclusion, you should need less than 1 page. Formatting Your paper should be 8-10 (full) pages in length, and if you follow the above suggestions, you should end up with at least 8 pages. A Title Page is not required for this assignment, but you should include a single-spaced header with your name and relevant class information the first page of your paper. A very brief running head with your name and page numbers should then be included on all other pages of your paper. You should use APA or ASA style formatting for in-text citations and your Works Cited page (separate). We will cover more on style formatting in class. Please double space between lines (except the header on the first page), use normal font (12-point Times New Roman), and use standard margins (1” or 1.25” max on all sides). Your paper will be evaluated primarily on the content of your work, but also on the quality of your writing. You have more than enough time to make at least one round of revisions (using spellcheck does not constitute revising your paper!), so the paper that you turn in should be well organized and have few, if any, spelling and/or grammatical errors. I am more than happy to help you with your writing, so please let me know if you are having any problems, or if you have any other questions and/or concerns. Good luck!
