Design Verification
1. Testing the LCD Display
A 16x2 Liquid Crystal Display is used to display the status of access after user verification. The display can produce 16 charac
ters in one row and has two such rows to display a total of 32 characters. A basic code to display characters on each of the 32-pixel boxes is used to verify the functionality of the display. After calibration of the contrast via the use of a potentiometer on pin 3 of the LCD module, the display proved to be functional without fault as visible in the following image.
2. RFID Reader
MFRC522 is an integrated RFID reader/writer that operates on the frequency of 13.56 MHz and can read and write data at a rate of up to 848 kilobits per second. Therefore, it is perfect to quickly fetch RFID data from a tag for verification of a user. For testing purposes, the RFID scanner was used to read two different RFID tags and it successfully read the ID of the RFID tag and provided a data output as HEX, that can further be converted and used in the application.
3. Relay
An electromechanical relay is used to control the electronic lock used to lock/unlock the door. It has one input and two output ports for use apart from the control signal connections.
These being the Normally Open (This connection is normally open thus no current flow unless the relay is provided with a control signal) and the Normally Closed (This connection is normally closed and thus has a path for current to flow if no controlling signal is received by the relay). When a controlling signal is applied to the relay the output ports switch their states. A continuity test using a multimeter can confirm the status of the ports and the appropriate port can then be configured with the type of lock used according to the...
