Introduction
Royal Greenland purchased Westfalia Strenz which is a lumpfish roe factory situated
in Cuxhaven, Germany from one of its competitor, Icelandic. The primary motive for the
acquisition was that Royal Greenfield wanted to become the prime producer of lumpfish
roe raw material in Greenland and will control the entire value chain. The acquisition of
Westfalia Strenz by Royal Greenland is an example of vertical integration which means
that the firm can exert much more control over the various legs of the supply chain and
hence will be able to apply efficiencies of operations by performing one more level of
the value chain. Vertical integration is a strategy followed by many organizations where
in two two businesses that are at different stages of production are merged so as to get
control over a large part of value chain. When this merger is aimed at getting closer to
the consumer it is called forward integration, for example: a food manufacturer and a
chain of supermarkets. The main aim of the vertical integration by Royal Greenland was
to venture into the retail space by taking care of the packaging of the Lumfish which is
not done by the players in the market and hence make the presence felt in the last leg of
the supply chain.

After the integration post acquisition, there were no major retrenchment except the
replacement of the production staff. The director of the Royal Greenfield got full control
over the value chain in the niche product with good expected pay off after the
acquisition. The challenges faced were to get the orders and development of the markets
for the products as the markets are shrinking and there are so many substitute products.
Also, Lumpfish roe is confined to the season of Chritmas and Esster and hence there is a
need to develop new areas to sell...
