2. INTRODUCTION
The industries in the country are classified and subdivided into different categories and are shown in The Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC). It was released in 2006 February. A recent revision was also made to the classification a redefinition of the scope and nature of primary activities was done to give space to emerging and new activities in to the list.
The topic of discussion in the report is ANZSIC division a subdivision 01 and class 0151 which deals with the sugar cane industry. This sector is considered as one of the important sectors that contribute to the stability and national income of the country. More people are engaged in the agricultural activities in the country and among the agricultural activities the sugar cane industry has secured its own place over the years.
The country is considered among the top exporter countries of agricultural products and sugar cane is one of the most exported good in the country. A major part of the export income is contributed by the sugar cane industry and hence it is important to have a conceptual knowledge of the industry, its nature and the inherent risks in it. The study also helps to identify and derive plans to mitigate the identified risk.
3. DESCRIPTION OF THE INDUSTRY
Sugar is considered as Australia’s second largest export crop. It contributes annual revenue of $2 billion into the country’s national income every year. About 95 per cent of the sugar exported is grown in Queensland and the rest in New South Wales. Apart from the export of sugar the company also exports raw sugar. About 80 – 85 per cent of raw sugar is also exported to the overseas buyers by the country.
Not only in the international market has the local market in the country also provided an annual income of about $1 million from the sugar industry. This industry also plays a major role in supporting the economic system of the country as they provide job opportunities and also many auxiliary industries are also seen in the different parts of the country.
Sugar is sourced from the sugar cane and most of the sugar canes are grown in family owned and operated farms. Farmers prepare the soil and make it ready for cultivation. When the soil is set, the cuttings from the matured cane stalks are planted in the prepared land. The growing period of the crop is about 10 to 18 months. When the crops get matured they are harvested by using the mechanical harvesters. The new inventions of harvesting machines, the modern cropping methods, irrigation methods etc. have helped the sugar cane industry in its success.
