Criminological Theories Classical/Rational Choice Theory Classical or Rational Choice theorists state that crime occurs when the benefits outweigh the costs—when people pursue self-interest in the absence of effective punishments. Crime is a free-willed choice. Positivist Crime Theory Positivist theorists of crime argue that human behavior and thusly criminal behavior is pre-disposed and fully determined by biological traits. In short, terms, what drives people towards crime is not a matter of free-will. Cesare Lombroso posited that people were born criminals, had mental disorders that caused them to become criminals or were criminaloids, people whose mental and emotional makeup gave them a higher propensity to become a criminal. Lombroso placed more emphasis on biological deficiencies, whereas later scholars would emphasize psychological and sociological factors. Individual Trait Crime Theory Criminals differ from non-criminals on a number of biological and psychological traits. Crime is due to a collection of personality traits that incline a person to commit crimes. Social Learning Social Learning Crime theorists state that crime is learned through interactions with others and the environment. Anomie A theory that posits that social instability resulting from a breakdown of standards and values causes a state of normlessness that influences criminal behavior. Crime occurs when people are led by their culture to want something, such as monetary success, but are denied access to the means to achieve these things.
