Type 2 Diabetes and Amputation
Definition and Pathophysiology:
Type 2 Diabetes: A chronic condition characterized by insulin resistance and high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period.
Above-Knee Amputation: A surgical procedure done to remove a limb due to complications such as severe infection or tissue death, often related to diabetes (Lauwers et al,2024).
Intersection/Relation: The above-knee amputation is a direct consequence of untreated or poorly managed type 2 diabetes, leading to severe diabetes-related foot disease (Ezzatvar & García-Hermoso,2023).
Impact on Quality of Life:
Factors Affecting Quality of Life: Physical mobility, mental health (stress, depression), financial impact, and social interactions (Tan Dat et al,2023).
- Impacts of Conditions: Reduced independence, limitations on activities of daily living, and the need for assistive devices or support (Lu & Guo,2023).
Strategy/Action/Behaviour Change:
Identified Strategy: Implementation of a daily physical activity routine adapted to the individual's abilities, focusing on improving cardiovascular health and managing blood sugar levels (Tuglo,2023).
Relevance and RN’s Role: This strategy is relevant for maintaining physical health and preventing further complications. As an RN, you would assess the individual's capabilities, suggest suitable exercises, and provide motivational support.
Local Service/Support Group:
Service Identified: A local community centre offering adaptive physical activities for individuals with disabilities (Borderie et al,2023).
Relevance and Assistance: This service provides a safe environment for physical activity, promoting independence and improving quality of life. Participation in such a group can also offer social support and reduce feelings of isolation
NDIS Role and RN Promotion:
Reference List
Role of NDIS: Funding support for physical therapy, prosthetics, and adaptive equipment to aid in daily living and mobility (Anita et al,2023).
RN’s Promotion of NDIS Code of Conduct Element: Respect for individuality – as an RN, you would personalise care plans and support the individual's choices and participation in their care and rehabilitation process (Eckert et al,2024).
