Pollution In Rivers Caused By Flooding
Every time water gets flooded due to more rains causing floods, and this is because our drainage system cannot take the excessive water. River’s banks also overflow and that causes flooding, particularly when the upstream water is more and in excess than the downstream water, causing floodplain, due to the flooding of low-lying areas. In this case, there is a burst of surplus water flow into the land. (eSchooltoday, 2010).
Along the banks of the river are the oldest inhabited places, where billion of liters of human sewage every day get discharged into the river water. When several industries, chemical factories and many towns are constructed and operate near the banks of rivers, the river water is utilized for every industry and residential purpose. In case the water is not cleaned or remain uncontaminated before sending it back to join the river water, the polluted and bad hygiene will have a very adverse effect, dirtying of water, causing river pollution. (Barrow, 2013; Kalinowska, M. B., & Rowiński, P. M., 2015).
Pollution can be in a variety of forms: Crisp packets Rubbish, plastic bags, newspaper, Poisonous substance, bottles, cans, and solid objects, excrement and human waste. (Barrow, 2013). The river water pollution is also caused by agricultural waste, when the farmers spray pesticides and fertilizers on crops for the better crop yield. Such pesticides/fertilizers get washed by rain through the field soil, and they ultimately flow up in the river water. Fertilizers/pesticides are extremely harmful as they trigger algae growth, which destroy the plants in the river water. (Barrow, 2013). Factories near the banks of the river use water to power and cool down their machinery, the warmer water packed with oil and factory chemicals is sent back to join the river, causing pollution. (Hamner et. al., 2006; Wiklund, J. A., Hall, R. I., Wolfe, B. B., Edwards, T. W., Farwell, A. J., & Dixon, D. G., 2014).
Such water pollution has a very damaging effect, can kill animals and water plants. Polluted water carries diseases, demonstrated by the FCC – Fecal Coliform Counts, decreasing the biological oxygen demand levels. And such polluted water can increase the overall waterborne/enteric rate of diseases, including diseases like acute gastrointestinal problems, dysentery, cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis-A. When the animals are sent to drink the river water, they are bound to get diseases. This particularly happens in the African...
