CAse study for therapeutic communication strategies
Introduction
Therapeutic communication can help in better understanding and helping a patient especially in an aged care facility or for thos
e that suffer from mental health issues. Not only does it help in between treatment, but also these strategies create an entirely holistic and positive environment that is expected in a care facility. The following case study relates the scenario of an ineffective communication between an elderly, a care provider, therapeutic strategies, and literacy skills that are needed to avoid such situations.
Body
Analysis of the chosen scenario shows that there is ineffective communication between the nurse and patient. The scenario is between a graduate registered nurse (GRN) who is beginning his evening shift at an aged Care facility and an aged patient at the facility. Here a conversation takes place between him, and a patient admitted there, Mrs. Pamela Jones. Mrs. Jones is an elderly woman that has been diagnosed with disorientation and dementia and confusion. She has difficulty in finding her bed among other things. The nurse finds Mrs. Jones confused and sobbing about not being able to find her things. As he approaches to help Mrs. Jones, there is an eminent communication gap between the two, which makes Mrs. Jones, upset about the entire scenario.
Apparently, due to the mental condition, Mrs. Jones felt comfortable with the nurse that was working in the morning shift and wanted her assistance instead, as she felt better connected to her. She pushes the help away as she feels threatened by the approach. This is another example of ineffective communication between the nurse and his patient. Mrs. Jones outburst is natural but the way of approach should have been different. As a new person that Mrs Jones doesn’t recognize or has had any sort of previous attachment to, it becomes necessary to be calm and patient while explaining the situation to her. The case worsens when Mrs. Jones’ son arrives at that moment and watching his mother upset loses his cool. He immediately uses an accusatory tone to question as to why his mother is visibly as upset as he had never seen this mother like that before.
The reaction of Mrs. Jones’ son is also quite natural because without any prior knowledge as to why his mother is upset, seeing her cry can make it difficult for anyone. However, instead of losing his temper and apparently accusing the nurse of misconduct towards his mother, he should have first tried understanding the situation. Mrs. Jones’ son assumed that he knows about his mother’s mental health, and therefore, have expected such an incident to occur. This is also an example of ineffective communication between the care provider and the patient or his family. However, as a nurse it is our duty to be more empathetic and understanding of the situations that is faced by both the patients and their families. So, the reaction of the son, although a little uncalled for must be accepted and he must be spoken to with the same level of calmness and...
