Introduction
The house on a mango street is a book that involves many characters with more focus given to Esperanza Cordero. Esperanza is a young girl, brought up by a Hispanic family who live in Chicago. Compelled by poverty pressures, the family is forced to move many times that even Esperanza herself cannot count. By the time the family move to reside in the Mango Street house, they are six in number, Papa, Mama, Kiki, Carlos, Nelly and herself. Esperanza is perhaps happy because the house belongs to them. Property owner problems such as rent, water bills, and electricity bills become outdated. Moving into the house makes Esperanza happy because she was ashamed and tired of living in apartment houses. However, contrary to her expectations and hopes, the house does not content Esparanza. Although the housing problem is solved, the poverty condition, which the family is subjected to, is not dealt with. The house has no yard, the windows are tiny, the front door sticks, and the number of bedrooms is only three. Although their parents tell them that the house is temporary, Esperanza does not believe.
The Poverty in Esperanza’s Life
At the commencement of the book, Esperanza is ashamed of her family’s economic status. Her ashamed feeling about the family is not pronounced as compared to the economic condition they face.
