The central protagonist in the novel 1984 is a thirty nine year old man named Weinstein Smith. Smith is an employee in the Ministry of Truth, an important department of the government of London which is in the nation of Oceania. The story is set in a time when war has destroyed most of the part of London and such war was not new to the people of Oceania as the government was at frequent war with the Eurasians whose leader was Goldstein, a counterpart of Oceania’s undisputed leader Big Brother. To enhance their hatred towards Goldstein the government employees of London had to watch the former on television for minimum five minutes and this brief period was termed as “Hate time”.
