English 1302 Writing Assignment Short Story-Song Comparison Your assignment is to do a bit of research online. Then pick a short story (one that you have not been assigned in this class) and then find a song that matches the story in a literary manner somehow••••••plot, character, theme, setting, etc. The story/song may be old or a recent hit; it doesn't matter. Once you have decided on a story and found a song, you are to do the following: 1. Attach the short story text and the song's complete lyrics. Be sure the complete title and author/artist are given for both. You can even provide a website that allows the song to be heard/viewed if you want. (Short Story link is fine) 2. In an analysis of 3 full pages typed and double spaced, you are to identify the short story and its author and the song and its singer/group. This will be done in the introduction. The body section will consist of a discussion of how the song matches the story in a literary way. You will need to identify (in detail) at least 3 similarities that the short story and the song share. The conclusion should briefly and effectively wrap up the previous discussion. You will also want to include a discussion of what interested you in the story and/or song and what you hope your audience will gain from reading your selected story and/or listening to your selected song. You should use present tense. 3. If you quote from the song or short story, be sure you cite within the paper. You will use the short story author's last name and the page number•••• (Faulkner 12). The source of the song will be the printout you use. You will use the singer's name/group name and the page number••••••(Def Leppard 1). 4. You will compile a Works Cited page that includes the short story and the song's lyrics. Use the provided materials to help you with this. ***When you are finished with this assignment, you will turn in the following: 1. Short story text (Link is fine if story is not in textbook) 2. Song lyrics 3. Discussion/Paper 4. Works Cited **This will count as three paper grades and one test. One grade will be for content, one for grammar, and one for format (both paper and MLA). These three grades will be averaged together and that final grade will count THREE times in the essay category. I hope you have fun with this assignment! I am looking forward to what you find! MLA Formats to Use•••••••••••••••••••••• Song Lyrics Found Online- Nirvana. ""Smells Like Teen Spirit."" Web. 1 February 2013. Short Story Found Online- Chopin, Kate. "The Storm." Short Story-Song Comparison
“The Elephant and the Rope” by Marie Fay
There is a story about a man who, as he was passing some elephants, suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only
a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at any time, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.
He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. “Well,” the trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”
The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.
“When you Believe” sang by Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston
Many nights we prayed with no proof anyone could hear
In our hearts a hope for a song we barely understood
Now we are not afraid although we know there's much to fear
We were moving mountains long before we knew we could, whoa, yes
There can be miracles when you believe
Though hope is frail, it’s hard to kill
Who knows what miracles you can achieve
When you believe somehow you will
You will when you believe
Mmmyeah
In this time of fear when prayer so often proves in vain
Hope seems like the summer bird too swiftly flown away
Yet now I'm standing here
My hearts so full, I can't explain
Seeking faith and speakin' words I never thought I'd say
There can be miracles when you believe (When you believe)
Though hope is frail it’s hard to kill (Mmm)
Who knows what miracles you can achieve (You can achieve)
When you believe somehow you will
You will when you believe
(Hey) (Ooh)
They don't always happen when you ask
And it’s easy to give in to your fears
But when you're blinded by your pain
Can't see the way, get through the rain
A small but still, resilient voice says hope is very near, oh (Oh)
There can be miracles (Miracles) when you believe (Boy, when you believe, yeah) (Though hope is frail) though hope is frail (Its hard) it’s hard to kill (Hard to kill, oh, yeah)
Who knows what miracles you can achieve (You can achieve, oh)
When you believe somehow you will (Somehow, somehow, somehow)
Somehow you will (I know, I know, know)
You will when you believe (When you) (Oh oh)
