Assignment: Write an academic review of Where am I Wearing?, by Kelsey Timmerman Step 1: Critically read Where am I Wearing? (see textbook Chapter 3 for more on critical reading). Step 2: Research/explore as needed: background, other similar works, etc. Step 3: Decide how to focus your review (you cannot review every aspect of the entire book). What is your main claim (thesis) in this review? What purpose will you accomplish in writing the review? What audience are you composing your review for? Step 4: Write a review Think of the reviews we have examined in class—especially those that engage with the broader context. Your review should be an academic review. Thus, you will not only write about whether it was “good” or “bad.” Rather you will consider the larger context, and in the process of assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the book you will also discuss (and assess) a larger element of culture and how this book fits into, or comments on, that larger view of culture. Details: 1100-1800 words Use MLA guidelines to format your paper (See Purdue OWL’s MLA guidelines for details) ALSO: before the title, add a line where you name and describe your intended audience. Include a creative title (not just “Review of Timmerman) Cite all sources used All semester long we will discuss what makes for good writing. Your writing should be clear and complex, and should show a deep understanding of Timmerman’s book and the context in which you read and review it.
