Null hypothesis: In hypothesis testing, a null hypothesis (H0) proposes that there is no difference between a population characteristic to the characteristic of a sample drawn from the same population. The null hypothesis also proposes that there is no difference between two or more sample characteristic (Black, 2006).
Alternative hypothesis: In hypothesis testing, an alternative hypothesis (H1) proposes that there is some difference between a population characteristic to the sample characteristic, with the sample being drawn from the same population. The alternative hypothesis also proposes that there is some difference between two or more sample characteristic (Black, 2006).
Significance level: Provided that the null hypothesis is assumed to be true, significance level is the probability of rejecting the null hypothesis (Black, 2006).
Hypothesis testing: Hypothesis testing is a statistical technique where an analyst tests an assumption regarding a population characteristic—such as mean or variance—or an assumption regarding comparing two or more samples (Christian Heumann, 2016).
Type I error: Type I error occurs when we reject a null hypothesis when it is true (Christian Heumann, 2016).
Type II error: Type II error occurs when we accept a null hypothesis when it is not true (Christian Heumann, 2016).
Test statistic: Test statistic of a statistical test describes how the observed data fares with the null hypothesis. The test statistic is then compared with the critical value at a certain confidence level—such as 95% or 99% to either accept or reject the null hypothesis (Black, 2006).
Decision rule: Decision rule is a statistical statement which gives information on the circumstances when we have to reject the null hypothesis (Black, 2006).
Critical value: In hypothesis testing, a critical value is calculated based on a z-value or t-value for normal distributions, chi-square value for chi-square distribution, and f-value for f-distribution. This value is then compared to the test statistic in order to conclude whether to accept or reject the null hypothesis of the test (Christian Heumann, 2016).
