INDS 205 Assessment 1 (2019) Due 4pm, May 15 2020 Essay worth 30% Choose one essay question and write an essay of 1000 words. Answer one question only. Your essay will be evaluated against the following criteria: (1)Thesis statement: Clearly and concisely states the essay’s purpose and demonstrates the relevance of the content of the essay to the question. Contains a declarative sentence that is engaging and thought provoking. (2)Using evidence: uses externally sourced material, such as research findings, facts, quotations, or other forms of information to support a more general claim, idea or argument. (3)Developing argument: constructs a coherent and convincing set of reasons for holding a particular point of view. (4)Critical evaluation: contains evaluative assertions or descriptive points about the value, significance, strengths and/or weaknesses of elements referred to in the essay. (5)Structuring: formal arrangement of the essay that supports the development of ideas within the essay. Has clearly recognisable introductory and concluding paragraphs, and paragraphs in the main body of the essay each have a clear, single concept or point as their main focus. (6)Use of Language: adheres to conventions of written English (word choice, grammar, punctuation and spelling) and is appropriate to the purpose and context. (7)Referencing: correct and consistent referencing and full bibliography. Industrialisation and Climate Change
Industrialization was the first major revolution to build economies of nations. The world started competing based on their gross domestic products. As years passed and technological advancement stepped in, the effects of the industrial revolution were being experienced. The damage had been done and the consequences of historical events were being faced. The depletion of the Ozone layer, loss of Biodiversity and melting of ice in Antarctica were the first signs displayed to the human race. This abrupt climate change reflects the slow violence caused by the developed and developing economies. Most of the businesses believe that climate change is for real but refrain from investing in preventive measures to mitigate the threat. Human activities such as energy production, deforestation, industry and transport are contributing to strengthen the economy but gradually harming the environment. Businesses are proactively planning strategies for sustainable growth of their company ignoring the fact that the environment is the major stakeholder.
Nixon’s Perspective of Slow Violence
Nixon considers slow violence as an invisible destructive element that spreads gradually through time but does not have violent motives. During 1991 the president of World Bank Lawrence summers proposed the bank to develop a scheme of exporting toxic wastes and garbage to African countries. He proposed this scheme to improve the environmental conditions in America and balance the toxicity levels among countries. But he had a hidden financial motive to gain subsidiary from shifting heavily polluting industries to African countries. This posed to be a win-win situation for the president of the World Bank. The environmentalists in America would stop protesting and World Bank would benefit financially from the African subcontinent. This event captures the essence of slow violence.
