Similar was the case as observed from the car manufacturers in Australia. The car industry was not killed by the high currency of Australia instead Christine Lagarde, chief of International Monetary Fund (IMF) reported this the as one of the outcome of ‘ogre of deflation’ (Kohler, 2014). Australia was the first country after Japan where Toyota cars were made and they fought really hard, so did major companied like Holden, General motors and Ford. Beside all their efforts and the years they put into the automobile industry in hope that it will sustain, in 2017 all three companies announced that they would cease the Australian assembly by 2017. Stanford (2017) mentioned that the decline in demand and increased supply of cars led to the closure of car assembly industry in Australia. Due to closure of these assemblies, not only the workers are unemployed but also nation’s economy has been impacted badly. However, debt was the major reason suggested behind the closure. When the national debt increases, companies tries to supply more product while the consumer tries to spend less in order to pay off debts. This leads to increased supply and decreased demand and is also called ‘ogre of deflation’. There is not a single country that can survive on the small manufacturing volumes as Australia’s car industry did and this was because it was exporting 8 out of 10 cars they were manufacturing. Therefore, export was the major income source but the surrounding developing countries killed it too. Developing countries such as Thailand provided cheaper labour that was $6 an hour, and therefore Australian car companies decided to import cars from Thailand instead of manufacturing them that led to increased debt and supply while the demand decreased (Beer, 2018).Comment by Evi Lanasier: Good background Research Aim This research aims to identify the major factors or reasons that led to the closure of car assembly industries in Australia. Research Objectives The objectives are: · To understand the reason for the decline and the factors that provoked the decline · To analyse the impact of this decline on the companies and on Australia · To identify suitable ways of restoring the automobile sector of Australia back to its proper positionComment by Evi Lanasier: should be qualitative research with qualitative data Brief Methodology In order to fulfil the requirements to answer the objectives, collecting and processing data will be conducted using a convenient method. Interpretive human physiology will be chosen because it takes into consideration the human perspective and will not provide conclusion based completely on the scientific data. Deductive approach will be applied for this study, which will reduce bulk of data and will mainly provide the key points. Research design for current will be explanatory because it will not deal with the positive or negative outcomes of research data. For current study, in order to focus on the main data, inclusion and exclusion criteria will be used. Data that is not based on Australia and is not in English language will be excluded while Australian data in English language will be included. Sources of Secondary Data, Data Presentation and Data Analysis Methods Secondary Data Sources As mentioned above, that various secondary data sources will be used for analysis. In order to analyse the factors responsible for the decline and the factors that were earlier thought could be a reason but were proven insignificant, sources such as government data, associated company’s reports, newspaper articles, journals have been used. For secondary data collection government resources and company’s self-published reports and interviews from the news articles have been selected.Comment by Evi Lanasier: Journal articles are not DATA Data Presentation After collecting the relevant data, data will be compiled using charts and graphs will be prepared in order to present the secondary data efficiently. Further use of figures will be done that will be relevant to the content. Charts and graphs will be arranged under constructed themes as per the secondary data sources. Data Analysis Methods Thematic analysis of the data will be done. Graphs comparison will be done to show the decline pattern with time among the car companies. Besides, co-relation between closing of a major company and its impact on the other companies will be presented. Charts will be used to analyse the import export of cars applying the thematic analysis. Further, combining the key findings, data will assist in presenting a future aspect of the study for other nations and respective strategies to be applied in order to prevent this situation. Section 1
1.1 Introduction
    The de
cline the sales in any industry lead to lower employment, reduced profit, degrading economy and contribution on inflation. In the context of Australia, in the last 5 years, the declines in the sales of the automobile cars, which had been one of the major industrial sectors, has declined in context of regulating factors, which the current research aims at exploring. The decline of the industry would mean that the people engaged in the industry as labour would either lose their jobs or will earn lesser money as the industry shrinks into a small profitable sector. The assessment of the reason for the decline in the mentioned industry will help in formulating solutions for the industry’s issues and would help the Australian people engaged in the industry to attain a secure career, better living standard and financial stability.
1.2 Problem Statement
The use of automated machineries, the development skilled labour bases, the strategic refinement and the high frequency of innovation, has made the automobile industry a very profitable sector, where the ratio to production cost with that of selling price tend to be far more profitable than it used to be a decades ago (Forbes, 2019). Keeping in mind the higher potential for profiting, companies within automobile industry have been offering best qualities for the best prices, creating a very competitive market. The aspect of globalisation has also increased the scope of higher manufacturing, considering that a major section of the production would be exported.
Positioning sharply in contrast to the scenario, the degree of globalisation and the higher competition in the market has brought in cheaper cars with higher quality offering, influencing the mindset of the customers. Therefore, the car manufacturers with higher pricing are facing lower sales as the customers do not see the balancing of value for money propositions. The global economic decline has also reduced the buying power of customers. The automobile manufacturers are well aware of the situation; however, the higher investment in marketing, the abidance of the government norms regarding the safety and emission standards has increased the need of sales demands (RIMS, 2013).
1.3 Aim, Objective and Questions
The aim of the current research is to identify the factors that are responsible for the decline sales in the automobile industry in Australia.
The objectives of the current research are as follows
· To identify the factors responsible for the declining sales in automobile industry in Australia
· To assess the impact of declining sales of Australian automobile industry on Australian economy
· To formulate strategic ways to improve the sales of the automobile industry in Australia
Based on the research objectives the research questions appear to be
· What are the factors responsible for the decline in sales of the Automobile industry in Australia?
· What is the impact of the declining sales in the automobile industry in Australia on the country’s economy?
· What are the strategic ways through which the sales of automobile industry in Australia can be improved?
Section 2
2.1 Justification for the Research
The issues of declining sales in the automobile industry is not exclusive to Australia only, as in many leading European, Asian and American automobile manufacturers are also facing issues of declining sales of their products in a consistent manner. Considering the global nature of the issue of declining sales in the automobile industry, discussions on the role of manufacturers have been discussed in researches developed by Lowe (1993), and the role of technology in influencing the declining sales scenario has been discussed by Narayanan (1998), in their literary research.
However, the consideration of all the factors as a whole, affecting the automobile industry has not been discussed properly, especially in the context of Australia, which has led to a significant gap in knowledge as to what has been the major factors that are contributing to the declining sales of the automobile in the country market. The current research, with its proper execution would explore the factors not as individual ones, but as a collective whole, which not only would help in understanding how the factors affect the automobile sales but would also hint at the ways in which the situation can be improved from its degrading state.
The current research shows that while the increasing investment for higher capacity, larger workforce sustaining, higher profit earning and ensure organisational growth companies need higher sales for its increased production consumption, the development of value for money proposition consideration and the lower buying capacity has led to lower sales numbers of automobiles. As stated by Kurpjuweit, Reinerth and Wagner (2018), as the buying capacity of customers decrease, the sales decrease as well, as the prices of commodities remain the same despite the decline in customers’ buying capacity.
The numbers of automobiles sales are declining, which is creating a big gap between the expected and the actual outcomes of the business, which is emerging as an issue that is hampering the profit of the organisations and the career potential of the people engages in the automobile industry in Australia. The declining sales of the automobile industry in Australian is an issues because while on one hand, the automobile manufacturers are investing huge amount of monetary investment in their production facilities and marketing, considering the high profit that exists in the industry, on the other hand, the declining sales are making the recovery of the invested money difficult and long-term.
This is making the attainment of newer technology unaffordable for the automobile companies’ profiting business. The declining sales also lead to employee layoffs, which affect the financial stability of the Australian society, from which the labours come for working in the industry. As mentioned by Albanese, Ghirelli and Picchio (2019), when the company do not achieve their desired target in the market, they lay off employees to ensure the lower sales generate the required profit for the company to sustain in the market.
The lower sales of automobiles in Australia is an issue now, because, unlike the previous decades, where the lower sales were gradually recovered by companies as the buying capacity of the customers increased, the recent times give the international automobile manufacturers to sell their cheaper automobiles to the customers in Australia, reducing the scope of recovering the lost market share and increase the declining sales numbers. In a market, as explained by Amoako and Okpattah (2018), where the customers do not have cheaper alternatives, the existing business tend to remain profitable despite declining sales as the selling prices remains same and with the launching of new products at the same price points the sales increase. As the Australian market has been accessed by...
