This is an image of one of Gerhard Richter’s Overpainted
Photographs and this particular painting is untitled, and
was composed in 1994 and it is actually Oil on photograph
which measures 20 cm x 15.9 cm (“Overpainted
Photographs: Other”, n.d.). It is a uniq
ue genre of art
which was brought about by Richter in the year 1989. This
particular type of art is actually composed through the use
of paint over photographs. Gerhard Richter invented this
new kind of art of painting by painting with oil paints
directly on the photographic surface. But it should be kept in mind that this technique of painting
was discovered by Richter accidentally and he discovered this new style of painting while
observing the color effects and the juxtaposition of different media of photography and painting
which he produced accidentally while dripping oil paints on to the photos and newspaper

n.d.). One interesting thing that can be found in this image is its abstractness and the
expressiveness, and all such characters give the image a look similar to any painting by the
impressionists. The revealed qualities of the image give it an essence of the impressionist genre
of painting (“Overpainted Photographs”, n.d.). Another thing that can be found in the image is
the freedom of color usage and the spontaneous application of color. And all these attributes has
turned the image into a unique piece of art.

which is a large-scale mural created by
the artist and is derived from digitally
manipulated photographs together
forming a geometric black and white
motif which represents the atomic
structure of strontium tinanate which is a synthetic substance used often to create artificial
diamond and moreover, this entire creation of Richter is composed of one hundred and thirty
digital prints mounted on aluminum with the help of plexiglass coating (“Gerhard Richter:
Strontium, 2005”, n.d.). The artwork is actually being installed in Wilsey Court which the de
Young’s central public gathering space (“Gerhard Richter: Strontium, 2005”, n.d.). A close and
minute observation of the image may reveal before the spectator the representational qualities of
the creation by Richter. If correctly analyzed Gerhard Richter’s Strontium is the reflection of the
artist’s interest in the language and pattern of opposites, the similarity in the difference between
original and the artificial and moreover, by...
