1. Identify and describe required sustainability initiative for MacVille
Mr. Seamus MacVille, who is the Business Manager of the company has examined many of the operations taking place in the company and found that the resources used in the office aren’t fully aligned with the aim of be sustainable business which is in-turn also been encouraged by sustainable team in the company. The real reasons behind the misalignment from the goal of being Sustainable is due to lack of formal process that enables employee to act in a manner that is more sustainable. Due to existing loop holes in MacVille’s policies and procedures the actions are not coherent with current business requirements. Re-programming the services for air-conditioning in the headquarters such that they are only activated in the business work hours and not 24*7. Intent was to save power and energy that the company was consuming especially when nobody was in the office.
2. Research and describe best practice model relevant to the business sector, esp as it relates to this case study
Many leading coffee makers like Starbucks, Costa and Barista are working towards a number of options such that it makes their business environmental friendly and as Green as possible. Best practices for meeting a business that is more sustainable can be identified by involvement of Top management and engaging each of the partner in the supply chain like suppliers, vendors and even communities to focus on sustainable farming. Second best practice that is relevant in the Coffee industry is Recycling and Reusing materials. Third and very important is to conserve energy and water such that operations in making coffee and process of refining it limits the wastage of these essential resources.
3. Identify and describe shortfalls in the existing policy and procedure documents by comparing research and information supplied
Ans3. Current problems identified in the case study provided is that there is no formal structure to implement the goal of sustainable development in the MacVille Enterprise. Especially, the erratic use of the company’s service draws a lot of attention and is one of the primary shortfall. Due to the absence of formal policies and procedures, employees take things for granted in a manner like keeping the lights, computers and systems on even when nobody is using it. Air conditioning being active at off-hours drawing tremendous amount of energy. Moreover, abundance of the wastage of water in the process of refining the coffee beans along with the cup of hot beverages reaching the customers.
4. Make recommendations for the existing policy option based on likely effectiveness, timeframes and budget
After an extensive analysis performed on the case, effective initiative should be taken to design the operations of MacVille such that there is least wastage of resources. Recycling the resources would in-turn help MacVille to save capital in purchasing more items and materials. This recommendation also have sustainable angle attached to it, by actively recycling the resources, one will conserve trees so thereby less cutting of forest. Timeframe for this initiative can range from 6 month to 12 months since Enterprise would have to invest in machines that are more environmental friendly and emit less carbon emissions, however once implemented effectively can help MacVille to achieve sustainable goal significantly.
Secondly, employees and even clients’ needs to be trained about the importance of goal of being sustainable. For instance placing the cup in the right bin and get discount for reducing your waste. The timeframe for the training employees can vary depending upon the acceptance rate amongst employee. Nevertheless, training the employees would require dedicated workshops conducted for a duration of 6-7 days. Furthermore, active involvement of leadership is required so that employees can sense the importance with the initiative and value the trainings provided.
Third, incorporating all the raw- materials and packing the products that are more organic and environmental friendly such that it can be re-used and recycled. One of the best practice in the industry, front-of-store recycling, can also inspire us.
Fourth and another very important initiative that MacVille needs to incorporate is to reduce the electricity and energy consumptions by monitoring all the electricity services such that one is able to identify when there is a leak or over and under consumption of the energy.
5. Clearly identify and summaries the scope of changes and new documents required that would need to be made to the MacVille policy and procedure set to ensure compliance with requirements of future sustainability initiatives
