Activity 1

Using the information you have been provided with and some additional external research, plan and produce a design for a complex relational database based on a response to the client brief. Normalise the data to 3rd normal form.

Produce design documentation in response to the client brief ensuring this shows the design of the tables, indexes and constraints, SQL queries, forms, macro and security measures.

LO2 Assessment criteria, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3

Activity 2

Your designs have been approved by the owner of Mahrud Bees. Implement the database using the designs you have created in activity 1. Ensure that your database includes all the features you designed in activity one plus a suitable graphical user interface.

LO3 Assessment criteria 3.1, 3.2

Activity 3
Now that the database has been implemented it needs to be tested. Explain the different testing methods that could be used to test the database and produce a test plan which identifies the tests to be carried out. This should include testing of extreme data and error handling.

Use the test plan and carry out the tests. Produce screen shot evidence to show the tests that have been carried out and explain any errors that need to be resolved.
Amend the database based on the testing.

LO3 Assessment criteria 3.3

Activity 4

Now that the database has been designed, implemented and tested reflect on the process. Produce a report which:
• critically evaluates the design process and documentation that was produced for Mahrud Bees database identifying improvements with the design documentation where appropriate
• reviews the database implementation process and explain what was successful and what you would do differently if you were to do this again
• evaluates the role of databases within Mahrud Bees. Compare this with how larger organisations use databases
• explains how Mahrud Bees can connect the database to other applications that it may use within the business
• recommends to Mahrud Bees a database management system they can use to maintain the database you have created

LO4 Assessment criteria 4.1, 4.2
LO1 Assessment criteria 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4

Task 1

Select an organisation with which you are familiar and assume that you are the marketing executive of the organisation.

Your organisation is considering launching a new product/service, and the marketing manager has asked you to deliver a presentation to the board. Your presentation must show how the new product or service aligns with the current business strategy.

Introduction
Mahrud Bees is a new entry in the business world and it keeps bees. These bees are kept that lead to the production of honey, pollen and royal jelly. The company sells honey and the cosmetics that are produced with the aid of royal jelly. With the expansion of the business, it has become necessary to keep the data and information sets in an accurate manner with efficient management of the data sets. An advanced relational database is therefore required to be designed for the recoding of the details of bees, customers, queen bees, and staff members along with the details of the orders, payments, suppliers and products.
Background
Relational databases are the databases that are based upon relational model and make use of tables for the storage of the information sets. These tables are inter-connected in nature and these databases make sure that issues are data duplication, errors and security are also avoided. In these databases, there is a set of tables that comprise of the data sets that are classified in specific categories. The table is also referred as a relation and there are data entries that are made in the columns of a table. Every row of the table in relational databases is unique. There are numerous database engines that are available in the market. In the case of Mahrud Bees, Microsoft Access (MS Access) is the database system that has been used for information storage and management (Worboys, 2015).
It makes use of Access Jet Database Engine for the storage of the information and data sets. The linking of the related information can be easily done with the aid of MS Access. The data can also be imported and exported to other formats with much ease. There are usually the following steps that are associated with the use of MS Access. These steps include the database creation, data input, querying and reporting. There is a lot of information that is required to be managed for Mahrud Bess. Some of these information and data sets include details of bees, queen bees, customers, staff, payments, products and many more. MS Access will provide the organization with the ability to easily organize and manage its data sets.
Normalization – 3NF
Normalization is a technique that is applied in the case of relational databases to ensure that the tables are correctly organized and there is no replication or duplication of the data sets.
There are several normal forms that have been created and the third normal form is referred as 3NF. It is the normal form that states that the tables must be in 2NF and the columns that have a non-transitive dependency upon the primary key shall only be present (Nptel, 2017). There are numerous benefits that are associated with the technique of normalization in the database. It makes the data related operations, such as searching, sorting and creation of the indexes faster. The tables are organized in a better manner that provide enhanced control over the physical placement of the data sets. The data queries and commanded over the modification of the data also become faster and easier. The redundancy and the duplication between the data sets also comes down leading to a more compact database. The triggers can be executed quickly along with easier maintenance of the data sets.
Forms in the Database
In case of the database for Mahrud Bess, there are eight forms that have been created as Bee, BeeProduct, Customer, Order, OrderProduct, Payment, Product and Queen Forms. Each of the forms has a set of fields that have been...
