Shadow banking is generally lightly regulated or unregulated.  However, since the 2007 financial crisis, western governments have examined shadow banking in more detail and have imposed a number of new regulation on their activities.  Thus, it is incorrect to say the industry is unregulated unless you specify a particular country where that is true. The shadow bank works similarly to traditional bankers but such banks are not regulated like a traditional banker (The central bank of Ireland, 2021). The entities which are involved in shadow banking such as finance companies, money markets, bond funds, and special purpose entities.
Nature of shadow banking and services provided by shadow banks:
The shadow banks work on a simple principle i.e. they invest the funds into the bonds or securities of various companies and in place of return earned they provide interest to the borrowers on their loans provided to shadow bankers. The shadow bankers provide various services such as credit facilities and increase liquidity in the financial sector. However, due to the non-regulated sector, such banks are having no access to central bank funding or safety nets such as debt guarantees and deposit insurance.
