It happened in mid 18th century, a group of soldiers and missionaries were sent by the Kin
g of Spain to establish settlements in the wilderness of California, almost 200 years after it was claimed for the Spain by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542. The coast of California was one of the most densely populated areas inhabited by the natives. The aim of the mission was mixed between establishing the flag of Spain in California to converting the natives to Christianity. The mission was led by Captain Gaspard de Portola who was both a devout Christian as well as a lifelong soldier. He considered the Church, an arm of the state. The church was respresnted by Junichero Serra, who considered it his life mission to convert the native Indians to Christianity. A subtle power struggle ensued between the two leaders. They had a difficult journey. Even though the ships arrived as planned to Mexico, the journey from Mexico to San Paulo was difficult. Many sailors suffered from scurvy, an unknown disease at that time with no cure. One ship was also lost. The total number of ships was reduced by half. Serra was bit by a mosquito that ulcerated making it difficult for him to walk. However, he continued on his journey trusting God. They arrived at San Dieago on July 1st 1769.
