Biltmore Estate
Who: George Washington Vanderbilt (grandson of railroad tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt). Used his inheritance to build the Biltmore Estate.
What: America's largest private residence. The house includes 255 rooms and 125,000 acres of property.
When: The land was purchased in 1889 and the house was built between 1890-1895.
Where: Just south of Asheville. Was called the village of Best and renamed Biltmore village.
Why: George Vanderbilt wanted a country home that was in an area that was healthy for his family. Helped keep Asheville alive during the Great Depression.
How: The house was built mainly of limestone from Indiana. A railway was connected from Asheville to where the house was built. A brick and woodworking factory was built on the construction site.
