2. Read chapters 5 -"Trials of Girlhood;" 6 -"The Jealous Mistress;" and 7- "The lover"
This week we will discuss the concept of the "Unspoken Victims" in this story. Discuss the following:
Unspoken Victims:
1. Unspoken Victims- All Americans:
Linda is quoted as saying, "Why do your tongues falter in the maintenance of right?" She, of course, is asking why so few white Americans would not speak up or out against such injustices? What is it that keeps many Americans today from speaking up or out against what is wrong? Is what keeps Americans quiet today the same thing that kept Americans quiet back then?( You don't have to answer this final question. It is food for thought).
2. Unspoken Victims-White Women, especially wives of slave owners:
Linda is quoted as saying "Hate is the atmosphere of hell." Explain how a white woman, looking at half-negro/half-white children running around must have felt about herself, her husband, her marriage, her husband's half-black children and the negro slave women.
3. Unspoken Victims-Manhood:
In Interpersonal Communication, we talked about the 3 P's of Manhood: Provide, Protect, and Procreate.
a. Explain how you think it would have felt to be a man unable to provide for your family; protect yourself, wife and kids from unjustifiable hurt, harm, danger or death at the hands of other men; or freely marry the woman you loved.
b. What kind of "Man" or "Manhood" emotionally and physically traumatizes, tortures, terrorizes and brutalizes the innocent, the weak, the lowly and/or those less fortunate?
