How pervasive has the masculine model been in your upbringing and thinking? Relational-cultural theory suggests that many large organizations function from a masculine bias—that the patriarchal system disempowers women and distorts their values and experience. Think about the places where you’ve worked. Did women’s ideas and preferences tend to be dismissed in favor of long-standing gendered models of private and public spheres? For example, have you seen a double standard in the assessment of male and female managers? Have you found yourself thinking in stereotypical terms? Try to explain the origin of your beliefs in the comparative abilities of men and women.
