How is beauty defined? The societal ideal of beauty is narrowly defined; although the “ideal” shape and weight vary, they are unrealistic for most. Problems with body image are connected to the global economy; wealthier countries are concerned more with obesity, poorer countries with hunger. In the United States, the number of obese people is rising. Obesity varies by inequalities of race, class, and gender; the poor are more likely to be overweight because of an unhealthy diet.
