Gay people are discriminated against, are stigmatized, and are sometimes the victims of hate crimes. Like other minority groups, homosexuals formed a subculture, which arose with other social movements in the 1960s. Homosexuality has now become a part of mainstream culture, and those negative repercussions are declining.
