Gender-role socialization permeates all aspects of our lives and is ongoing throughout the life course. Even before birth, parents choose colors and clothing based on gender. Boys and girls are socialized into two different sets of norms, and this socialization is pronounced during childhood. Gender transgressions are punished by every agent of socialization. As children grow into adolescents and adults, they continue to be socialized by these agents on what is appropriate for males and females in different situations and at different stages of the life course.
