How are the media regulated? There are some laws regarding monopolies, particularly with newspapers, but these laws are relaxing. Another way of regulating media is through examining the effects of consumption on viewers. There are claims that all new media lead to violence or the destruction of society, but these claims tend not to be backed up empirically. Worry about the effects on people, especially children, leads to attempts at censorship. Censorship varies over time and by culture and place and is usually propelled by concerns over sex and violence. Sociologists are interested in how censorship is determined by power, inequality, and choice.
