Genetics and genetic engineering. Here is the place where you will put your understanding
of DNA, RNA and protein synthesis to the test.
Genes are also known as; segments of genetic material (DNA in most of the cases) and
they are related with the expression of characters. It could become possible because o
f
transcription (formation of m-RNA from DNA) and translation (synthesis of proteins directed by
m-RNA) mechanisms governed by genes. Now, Genetics may be defined as; the branch of
science which deals with heredity and the distinction of inherited attributes and Genetic
engineering can be described as; the technology entailing all the procedures of modifying
the genetic matter of a cell to make it able for performing the preferred purposes such as;
generating novel stuffs. So, both of above branches can be called complementary since; genetics
helps us in getting an idea about how genes work and genetic engineering assists us in practical
application of knowledge derived from genetics.
What are your thoughts on recombination? Mutations?
In my opinion, both recombination and mutation can be termed as; amazing tools
designed by nature to generate variations. Recombination performs it via creation of
new allelic combination in offspring that could become possible because of exchanges between
genetic materials (for instance; exchange of sequences between DNA molecules) and mutation
achieves it by inducing a permanent, genetic alteration in the nucleotide sequence of a gene.

The ability of an organism to adapt to changing environments.
Such ability is known as; adaptation (natural or acquired) which can be defined further
as; a characteristic which is common in a population because; it provides some enhanced
function. Adaptation might reflect itself in several forms for instance; it can be a behavior which
permits better evasion of enemies (such as; by Chemoflauge), a protein that may function in an
improved manner (as; Thioredoxin enzymes which could get modified to work even in alkaline
conditions while, initially these were fit for working in acidic environment), or an anatomical
characteristic (for example; better development of humans’ hands than other organisms) which
permits the creature to access an important novel resource. After all, adaptations try to make an
organism better and can be further selected by nature because of such quality thus; these might
perform an extremely important role in the path of evolution.
